I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

I like Pinyin name as long as they are short and easy to pronounce. Baidu is an excellent Pinyin name, for example.

Chinese Domain King Wen Sheng CAI made his fortune years ago when he bought up lots of Pinyin .com, or so I read. For large companies, they must consider global acceptance of their Pinyin name. Xiaomi is a good example. It's hard to remember how to pronounce and spell out the name. So, it appears the company is rebranding to Mi.com after they purchased the domain name last year.

LuSeJiShu (綠色技術) is only 9 letters so it's not long. There may be potential as pollution is a big issue in China and going green is important. But, I don't know much about this field to offer any opinion.

What are your thoughts on Pinyin .com names of American cities. Are they search words by mandarin users on Baidu.com?

Thanks for all of your wisdom. I have been reading your posts daily.

Hi ChinaMobi appreciate all the news and info you provide for us domainers. I also had a question about numerics.

What do you think of numbers ending with 75?

It depends on what's before 75. In the following examples, 75 is fine.

575:我去玩>I'm going to play
175:一起玩>Play together

I'm guessing with 875 is luck will play? or player with luck?

Thanks again.

Thanks for all of your wisdom. I have been reading your posts daily.

Interesting question. I never thought about it. In fact, I have not come across any Pinyin name of non Chinese city. For example, New York in Chinese is 纽约 and its Pinyin name is Niu Yue. I tried Baidu but found no site using the Pinyin name. I'm not sure if use of Pinyin-based non Chinese city names will ever become popular.

Actually, I couldn't come up with a meaningful Chinese phrase using 875. Maybe some other Chinese NPers can help. Sorry.

That is nearly $25 Million dollars in one days' auction.

(((Banana.com (English) for $2 million??? )))

I do not know the record for a day's domain auction. I suspect it used to be a fraction of what just happened. Stunning, just stunning.

Finding gems even in long numbers

What I have realized is that: you can still find gems even in long numbers. The trick is to turn a long number into a meaningful Chinese phrase. For example, I just came across domain name 1314527.com now being sold with BIN of 5,000 RMB.

1314527:一生一世我爱吃>I love to eat forever

Source: 574835.shop.ename.com

Want even longer numbers? Try the following numbers I came across somewhere else. I'm not sure if they are already registered or not.

5203344587:我爱你生生世世不变心>I love you forever with the same heart
8807701314520:抱抱你亲亲你一生一世我爱你>Hug you, kiss you, I love you forever

Surprisingly, 8807701314520 is quite easy if you split it into three segments and then say them in Chinese.

880
770
1314520

It's very smooth. I like it.

Impressive interpretations of the numerics.
Thank you, ChinaMobi!

The more I read this tread, the more apparent it becomes that only native (Chinese) speaker stands a chance...
Although, I've been in touch with a university-trained, official government licensed translator in Beijing, who steadfastly refused to associate any meaning with the numbers whatsoever.
She (35 y.o.) told me that Feng Shui has no meaning for the young and middle-aged Chinese; 8's, 4's are just numbers.
More than that, she says Yabla, the same as Google translations are laughable.

I didn't put to her the argument about Chinese buying 8's for princely sums.
She's so strong-willed and assured about her knowledge of the Chinese culture and languages, that she would brash it away, anyway...

Really? i highly doubt this. its not absolute or black and white. There are some common trends all domainers can find out...if they want.

Be cautious when reading Dec 20 data as many figures are too good to believe. The latest figures (Dec 21) are back to the normal trends. Check out the source yourself.

Why is the Chinese domain name market so hot?

As shown by YAO.com sold for 21,500,000 RMB at the recent auction in the Chinese Domain Festival and China Digital Asset Investment Summit, the Chinese domain name market is really really hot! Why? Here are three reasons.

1. Rarity of quality domain names
Theoretically, the number of domain names available is so astronomical that it can be consider unlimited. But, only a small number of them can be used for communication purpose. So, short supply means higher prices.

2. Internet growth and startup boom
This is further fueled by the government push for 'everyone starting a business' strategy. This creates huge demand for domain names to build websites.

3. Large influx of capital
Domain name transactions used to be low profile and done among domainers and some IT professionals. But, this year a lot of money left the stagnant housing market and stock market crash and entered the domain name market.

Hi, what do you think about the swiss ending .ch

could .ch be interesting for the Chinese market?

where is the best place to sell domains like hzj.ch, hxd.ch or btj.ch

Thank you!
Best regards from germany

@batrone I've learned that the sheer Internet population in China means anything is possible. .ch is not there yet, but, for example, .cc is. Keep reading domain news and watch to see if .ch pops up.

Funny that the huge number of xyz regs are in China but notmany reported sales as yet.

Great to see this is just the start of the asian domain investment invasion like the real estate boom in BC thats in full swing here!

Also just curious why dot co domains are not popular in China and why dotcc is?

Also are hyphens popular in the Asian market at all?

I've got only one hyphen xyz & 1 dotco I think may be of interest to someone in this area since it's quite relevant to the topic:

Pin-Yin.xyz

Pin-Yin.co

@NicMarket.com I'm sorry. I'm not a domain expert so I don't know its value. However, this is what I know.

Shu:数
Ju:据
Wang:网
Luo:络

When it comes to Pinyin domain names, Chinese use jargons such as single-pin, double-pin, 3-pin, and 4-pin. The maximum number of Pinyin characters commonly used is perhaps 4-pin, and your domain name is a 4-pin.

Anyway, Baidu returns quite a lot of news pages containing 数据网络.
