I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

Upgrade is name of the game

Bailian Group is the largest retailer in China. Since 2009, it's been running its Internet mall on the domain name BLGFSC.com.

I guess no one can remember this name. But, the good news is: the company recently spent the money and upgraded the website to BL.com

BL:百联>Hundred connections
BL:爆料>Exposé
BL:便利>Convenience
BL:宾利>Bentley
BL:巴黎>Paris
BL:柏林>Berlin
BL:伴侣>Companion

So, going short is the trend. That's why I like short names that are easy to remember and can be used for branding.

I don't know. I never understand the merit of half-IDN-half-ascii approach such as IDN.com.
I'm not sure of the merit of IDN either. I decided to register one as an experiment: 北京.ws
I'll let you know if it gains any significant traffic.

Even .cc is hot!

X.cc was sold for 1.85m RMB

X is one of only 26 alphabets so it's very rare.

X:写>Write
X:想>Think
X:选>Select
X:心>Heart
X:学>Learn
X:鲜>Fresh

Earlier J.cc was sold for about 4m RMB and S.cc 2.31m RMB.

Can you tell me please if "ncij" means something in chinese , it is an acronym ?

Thanks.

Google Translate gives:
ncij:能刺激>Can stimulate

I think it's incorrect because there should be 4 Chinese characters instead of three.

OK, this is really a stretch, but I'll try it anyway. Don't take my words too much.

ncij:南昌爱菊>Nanchang's favorite Chrysanthemum

Note:
1. "i" offers very limited choices when creating a Chinese phrase. It's is associated with "love" only, in my dictionary anyway.

2. Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province and there's a Nanchang Chrysanthemum Exhibition every year, so I guess they love Chrysanthemum.

Anyway, I don't have a good explanation for ncji.

@china Mobi, thanks for the informative thread firstly.

I wanted to ask your advice. I am new to this game and very much would like to jump on the Chinese bandwagon- I think their joining the market and imminent internet boom make for very fertile lands. Trouble is that I do not currently have the funds/experience to justify investing in a short letter/number domain. Therefore I have invested in some domains as below:
  • ChineseTastes .COM
  • LuckyMahjong .COM
I would be grateful for your thoughts on these types of domains- i.e english language but either focused on China or geared towards potential Chinese development. I have also invested in domains with Chinese text e.g. ZoungguoCai .COM (Chinese Food .COM- I do not own this one, it is just an example). What are you r thoughts on these types of domains?

Appreciate your help.

@domain invest3r, I don't know much about two-word .com. I'm quite concerned particularly if the 2nd word may become an extension. For example, wine.club may decrease value of wineclub.com, etc.

End users in China are still buying Pinyin names. If you read Chinese, I recommend that you use Baidu news on domains. Then you'll see what companies are buying.

Make a long number easy to remember

How many can remember the number 91160? I can't.

A Chinese medtech startup bought this domain name and turned it into a great brand. The company develops medical apps which you can use to make medical appointment, pay for services, look at test result, etc. Founded in 2005, it now has registered 5,000 hospitals, 330,000 doctors, and 30 million real-name subscribers. It's a very successful startup.

Like any startup, I guess they didn't have much capital so they acquired a 5N (must be dirt cheap back in 2005). But, they turned something cheap into something very valuable. The key is rhyming.

91 rhymes with 就医 (literally meaning "seek doctors", very appropriate for what the company does). Once you remember the 91 part, then the 160 part is relatively easy when you say it in Chinese. The average consumer can now remember this website name when they want to see a doctor.

The company has also secured the .cn and .net extensions.

Other companies which also use 5L are: 12306.cn, 12308.com, and 10037.com.

Thanks ChinaMobi. Agreed re the two word point although I do like king for the next 3-5 years at least.

I have done some due diligence and Pinyin seems to be on the rise if anything, particularly as China becomes more open and seeks to partake in the globalization movement. I own a few Pinyin names- some I will keep in my back pocket for now but others like LuseJishu .COM (green technology) I would be grateful for your opinion on.

Granted this does not throw up many results in Google at all (perhaps not a phrase yet coined in China), however I have hope that the value in the verbatim translation holds some weight. If anything for a Western company.

Cheers,

DI

Thanks for the good job you are doing here.
What do you think of 58v.link?

58v

58:网吧>Internet cafe
58:我发>I make a fortune
58:我伴>I accompany (you)

Generally speaking, I don't like "v" because it offers very limited choices when I want to create a brand. Of course, there are always exceptions, such as the ones below.

VVQ:微微圈>Small small circle
BMV:便民网>Convenience net

So,

58v:我伴网>A companion net (dating?)

Still, it's quite weak, which is further weakened by ".link" which is not yet popular in China.

Anyway, I must admit this is a tough one. Good luck.

938.com and 8558.com

Domain investor Ai Mi(nickname?) announced that he sold 938.com to investor Tian Ming(nickname?). No price information was given, but Ai Mi bought the domain name only last month for mid 7 figures RMB.

938:酒商发>Wine merchant making a fortune

All of 9, 3, and 8 are lucky numbers, and they are easy to say in Chinese.

Ai Mi also bought 914.com and 8558.com

8558: 发我我发>I'm making a fortune all the way.

Hi ChinaMobi appreciate all the news and info you provide for us domainers. I also had a question about numerics.

What do you think of numbers ending with 75?

When you look at the sheer size of the Chinese Internet population, then any extension is possible. Personally, however, I'm still stuck with the concept that .co= Columbia and I don't know how stable the government will be. A good example in history is Syria. In 2013, art startup Artsy saw its Art.sy go blank when Syria cut itself off from the Internet. So, no, I'll stick to .com.
People like it because it sounds like company or corporation, most don't even know it related to Colombia. Same thing with .cc
