I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

Domain investor leizhu (nickname?) just sold DI.com, but the price is not known.

di:滴>Drops (as in drops of water etc)
di:帝>Emperor

It can also serve as an acronym for Discovery Inspire and Domain Investment.

EN: Five number .COM domain name with AABCC pattern
CN: 五个数.COM域名同AABCC格局

Thanks ;)

Meaning of 348 and 54?

Sorry if you've answered already.

•••

Five (五, pinyin: wǔ, jyutping: ng) is associated with "not" (Mandarin 無, pinyin , and Cantonese 唔 m). If used for the negative connotation it can become good by using it with a negative. Thus, 54 means "no death".

That's true. Google Translate gives:

XLY:叙利亚>Syria

That's why you cannot depend completely on machines to do all the work for you.

I'm glad you enjoy my posts. Thank you!

DNL8:电脑乐吧>Computer fun bar

I like it. In fact, I like LLLN but not NNNL/NNLL/NLLL because I believe you'll find more end users with their company name matching LLL than, say, NNN.

Good luck with your domain name!

Do many Chinese people know the English spelling of their name?
For example if someone was named Chung would it be difficult for him to go to Chung.com?
Many Chinese names in English contain vowels is that a problem?

In a recent interview, successful domain investor Zheng Feng YANG gave the following comments.

  • His end-user customers are willing to spend 5 to 6 figures RMB to get a domain name that enables them to punch above their weight.
  • He likes 3I in the .cn, .net, and .com extensions.
  • He always invests in domain names that can be used by end users. For this reason, he does not like numerics. He thinks 3I has the largest market, as many corporate trademarks use 3I or 3L. 3-word pinyin is too long, he added.

Yong Dong XIE has been involved in the domaining circle for 12 years. He specializes in big data analysis of domain names. In a recent interview, he shared some of his experiences and viewpoints with readers.

  • When it comes to domain investment, his advice is not to invest blindly but to understand the three attributes of domain name: end user application, investment value, and memorability.
  • In terms of portfolio acquisition of numerics, he does not see any future in 7N and beyond. 5N and 6N are acceptable if they can be hand-regged.
  • He thinks it's possible extensions other than .com may rise up, but the chance is not great. It depends on how the registry runs the business and nurtures their market.
  • He has seen a change of attitude in those who participated in the domaining game. In the beginning, domain name was considered as a way to connect to the Internet, but now it's valued as a brand. Businesses now pay serious attention to domain names.
  • Will participation by the masses come? Xie believes so, and domain name will be seen as a financial asset.

0 and 4 still sell.

Look at the Dec 8 eName auction in the "others" category listing 3C domain names sold.

1. GC9.com 12k RMB
2. GH4.com 7k
3. F0Q.com 2k

The best one is a 9. But 4 and 0, though of less value, still have value.

4L flipping

Investor Shan Ren (nickname?) recently sold three 4Ls (8285.com, 8582.com, 7199.com) and then also bought more than 10 4Ls for close to 2m RMB.

Shan Ren flips 4Ls regularly, and the latest acquisition includes 8365.com, 3225.com, and 2378.com. Most of them feature 6, 8, or 9 -- lucky numbers favored by Chinese. No 0 and 4. These numbers have better quality than the average 4Ls.

Earlier, he sold 3952.com for 230k RMB and 3829.com for 210k. He feels 4Ls are stable in prices and many buyers are willing to spend that amount of money. These names will certainly rise in value, he added.

Currently, the market price of 4Ls without 0 and 4 is 230k RMB or above, and better quality names can command even higher prices. Some examples are 2271.com (mid 6), 9394.com (mid 6), and 1117.com (7 figures).

4Ls are liquid and have great investment and application values. They can be used to build gaming, navigation, and lottery sites. Recently, YY Game launched a new gaming platform on 4366.com

Interview with Wilson Guo Xin CHEN, the college student who bought 73.com for more than 10m RMB.

Here are some interesting things I find in the interview.

  • Wilson is a student at University of New South Wales (Australia).
  • His began domaining end of 2013.
  • His current focus is 3I and 4I. He particularly likes 4Is because they are quite low in prices so have great potential for appreciation.
  • Some domain names in his 3I collection include FZS.com (福州市>Fuzhou city), XTQ.com (小提琴>violin) and QCD.com (汽车贷>Car loan).
  • He thinks domain investment requires the ability to overcome the feeling of loneliness and the temptation to sell too early. And, you must be able to act decisively. Wilson lost the opportunity to buy the excellent DKJ.com (贷款家>Lender) because he hesitated.
  • He owns only .com names but feels .cn has potential. He has no opinion on other extensions because he does not understand them.
