Does anyone know what a good Chinese pinyin (phonetic) domain name is worth? I'm talking about things like shengyi.com, which is the phonetic version of 'business'.com in Chinese. I don't own it, but am just using it as an example. What would you pay for a good generic Chinese (non-IDN) word?

What I'm really trying to figure out is: what kind of discount, if any, would you put on a Chinese domain. So, for example, if a good generic English language domain sold for $1 million, what do you think the price might be for it's Chinese equivalent?

I realize there are cultural and other economic factors that make comparisons difficult. For example, wallstreet.com sold for $1.03 million a few years ago, and there is no Wall Street per se in China. But all things being equal, what kind of discount would you put on something like the Chinese version of 'business'.com vs. the English version?

As a follow up question, do you know of any big Chinese domain name sales (besides Chinese.com -- which sold for $1+ million recently, but is technically an English domain)?

Thanks

There's no formula to calculate. The shorter the better. Chinese users can't remember any English words that's longer than 3 letters. I heard some Chinese domainers complain that they can't remember how to spell .mobi or .asia. I guess that's why Google had to buy g.cn
As long as you develop the domain into a real site, either one can work quite well. In fact, the Chinese name version often works better, eg: BaiDu.com beats Google.com and Yahoo.com (65%:15%:10%), Taobao.com beats Eachnet.com(ebay China).

(1 USD = 7.2 Chinese Yuan)

MangGuo.com - 250,000 CNY (Mango)
NingMeng.com - 170,000 CNY (Lemon)
ShouCang.com+ShouCang.net+SouCang.com - 300,000 CNY
ZhangShi.com - 100,000 CNY (bull trend)
m.cn - 3.3 million CNY
g.cn (much higher)

There are lots of chinese domainer and I believe most good pinyin domain name had been snapped. I am wonder too for China market. Will they be the one that push the success of IDN?

Chinese users can't remember any English words that's longer than 3 letters. This is troublesome. That's why number domain is nice in China. They can remember 0-9, they are good in maths right?

I don't invest in IDN myself. There's too many IDN choices out there.

中国.com
中国.cn
中国.公司
中国 (I might buy this version once it gets approved by ICANN)

It's really quite easy for native Chinese language speakers to remember numbers. I guess that's why they are good at math.

In China, nobody knows how to call a number like 1-800-CALL-YOU. They only recognize numbers.

A Chinese friend told me he always visits CMB Bank's website at 8008205555.com because he can't remember the official domain name CMBChina.com
