Okay, so I moved to Ft Lauderdale to finish school and I did that. Then I figured I'd stay here and build a nice little online business, well I did that too. Now I'm wondering, where would I like to live next.

I want to live in a place where renting a little 3/2 house in a quiet town is pretty cheap compared to the $1700 bottom - $2500 average rental down here in south Florida.

So, what area of the country gets the best bang for the buck, where the pretty girls out number the guys 5 to 1, and everyone in town has a prescription for medicinal marijuana?

Seriously though, I would love to rent a lake house for the summer where I didn't see another soul for weeks. I just need ele and the internet, any ideas?

Now that you mention that Jeff, I have always wanted to hike that trail; and I hear it's the trip of a lifetime.

Why do you want a 3-bedroom house? You have a family? You can party in South America non-stop on $2,000/month. Hotels and everything else included.

I was a musician for 20 years, some people dream about partying, I am bored with parties. I want a quiet peaceful drama free life of just waking up to the birds, and laying back in a lounge chair at night to watch the stars.

Some obscure lake house would be perfect. Google points towards Ohio when searching for affordabe housing; and craigslist seems to have some incredible deals in that area. Some of these prices seem crazy, a 2/2 lake house for $700 a month!!!

No boom car radios, no people screaming for attention over their cell phones, no elderly drugged up zombies speeding down the road with their eyes closed. Just quiet peaceful somber living.

This is what I yearn for.

Sounds like you want Mississippi. Plenty of water, nature, quiet and cheap.

I would still recommend South America. Outside major cities there a family will live on $50-$200/month. You will not even be able to spend $1,000/month in a rural area in South America. People are super-nice and your life can be as quite as you want. Your biggest expense will be internet access in fact. Look into central Colombia.

Fargo, North Dakota. Hands down. No questions asked.

Personal Reason?
Because I've been around the globe, and have been to all but 5 U.S States, have lived in Ohio, Florida and Las Vegas for extended periods of time - and settled in Fargo. Plenty of reasons for that actually.

Fargo is an incredibly secure area. The community has just proven that there's no comparable in the U.S. It's just a short drive to the Lakes of Minnesota.
At Fargo's Hector Airport, I get through security in under 2 minutes (Yes, i timed it) and can fly to just about anywhere in the world with only one layover in MSP. (Minneapolis/Saint Paul).
The rental market is very affordable (2 bedroom w. 2 car garage in a 5 year old building - approx. $600/mth), the housing market is stable, when compared to the rest of the USA.
Granted, we've had our share of lay offs here as well, then again - who hasn't?
The infrastructure is great, spendable income is still here, restaurants are plenty, bars and wineries as well, yet - it's all just a calm environment.
North Dakotans are known for being friendly folks, the ladies here are not exactly offensive to the eye either :tu:.

Bottom line: I'm REALLY trying to get another NP user to move to N.D :hehe: I am truly a minority here!

Hey I went to scout out Fargo, and you're right, it is really affordable there. You can get a huge house there for the average price here. I mean $2500 a month can rent you a mansion up there, down here it gets you a yard with a fence in a half way decent neighborhood.

Thanks for that one, I put out a few feelers to see whats what, and who knows, maybe I might move up there for the summer. My assistant says its beautiful up there 3 1/2 months out of the year, so I'm looking for a short lease to a furnished place on a lake.

A QUIET lake :)

:hehe: it's actually more than 3 1/2 mths per year. The lakes over in Minnesota are great though, definitely worth a lengthy vacation.
Let me know if you're planning to head this way to check it out.

It gets a little chilly in the winter :) How chilly you ask? Growing up in southern Minnesota I remember the depth the ground was frozen to was part of the weather report. By spring the answer was 2'-3' :)

Someone mentioned this place, I bet there are guys who actually live like this in real life.

Still looking and searching, might just go on a tour of the US, dust off my guitar and play some old bars along the way.

Port Huron, MI.

Well, really anywhere in Michigan. Everything is cheap as hell, but it's also the unemployment capital of the country. It's surrounded by lakes and rivers, though.

I would suggest you broaden your horizons and leave the US. Get yourself over to Europe for a couple of years, I promise it will make you a better person ;)

I'm from Scotland, but have now lived all over Europe. My next move is Bucharest in Romania in a couple of months. Don't let borders limit you ;)

I have lived in Holland, Czech Republic and Belgium. And visited most all European countries. Europe is the place to be :)
