Yes, it is free for a year. However, you need a dedicated IP at your host and them to install it.

if you're registering less than 5 domains then stick with name. at 5+ you might consider godaddy as it would be free, however, the way they set up private whois is a bit of a hassle as it doesn't automatically group older/newer domains that you register with privacy. basically, there could be more and more account information for you to keep track of.

When I had domains at namecheap, they gave 1 year free whois privacy, but upon renewal, the whois privacy was not free. Has this changed?

So far, name.com sounds the best.
