Catching dropping domains

If you know which registrar is dropping the domain, does that help you catch it?

As far as I understand it, there are 3 major drop catchers (NJ, SN, and Pool). Are their partners known? So if I know that, for example, SomethingNIC is dropping a domain, and NJ catches SomethingNIC drops, I'll go to NJ to pick up the drop.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, is the name in redemption or not ?

Some registrars have agreements to send their expired domains to auction house (snap, NJ or whatever). These names are expired but have not dropped yet.
If the name is in redemption then it's bound to drop (unless it's redeemed by the registrant) and any catcher could snap it. In this case it's best to place multiple backorders with different catchers.

I don't have a full (up to date) list of drop partnerships, any specific registrar you're interested in ?

Nothing specific, I just discovered Name.com's Domain Nabber. It has decent search for dropping domains and indicates the dropping registrar. I just wanted to see if that can be helpful for increasing the chances of picking up a drop.

For pendingDelete domains, GD's backorder system harnesses 8 registrar tags to catch dropping domains for as little as $8.99 per name.

Name.com's Domain Nabber charges $18.95 for just 3 additional registrar tags. Not worth it for the marginal extra power.

It helps in backordering and if the name is NOT in pending delete status. If it is in Pending delete, the registrar does not matter. Whoever has the best technology will grab it. If you think the name doesn't have broad appeal, you can us most decent generic drop service and will have ok luck. If it is a good one or you HAVE to have it, Enom/NameJet, Snap and then pool are the best.(in that order in my opinion)

Yes, but Name.com's Domain Nabber could be just used to find deleting domains with useful informations and filters, and then use GD to backorder.

The OP question is something i was curious to know too: if you see, for example, the registrar of a dropping domain is GoDaddy, using their backorder system would have more chance than usual against biggest backorder services like NameJet, Pool or SnapNames?

My answer would be .. "No". But i'm not very expert about that.

-EDIT-
I haven't read the MrSpartan reply. How's possible?
LOL.
Sorry, he perfectly replied.

I could be wrong, but I doubt Domain Nabber offers any statistics on deleting domains that Estibot, FreshDrop, or NameFlipper doesn't.

At any rate, MrSpartan's response is generally correct. But the vast majority of domains can be caught with a GoDaddy backorder; no need to rely on the "big 3". Of the "big 3", SnapNames has the highest capture rate when a given domain is backordered across all 3 major services, and unlike NameJet, SnapNames will keep your bids hidden to help prevent competing bids from piling up. Plus SN backorders are $10 cheaper than NJ's. I don't see any advantage to using NJ over SN, but we're talking a high-value .COM or .NET with no NJ backorders by 11:59:30am ET on its drop date, it's definitely worth throwing in an NJ backorder at 11:59:40at ET in effort to potentially "snipe" that domain name before anyone else gets the chance to backorder it on NJ before the deadline (12:00pm ET).

I definitely agree with Joshua on this one. Based on my recent experiences, SnapNames has captured far more names for me than NameJet and Pool. Another benefit is that SnapNames seems to have fewer bidders per name, which means less competition if the domain goes to auction. In just the last few days, NameJet and Pool each got one name for me (though the Pool one got bid up way too high for me to actually acquire it), and SnapNames caught four during the same period. Not to mention their interface is miles ahead of the other two.

Well, with Domain Nabber you can just see what is the registrar ;) ahah the OP question was focused on this point IMHO.

Yes, that was the focus of my question but I think that in general the main concept was answered. It seems that it doesn't really matter which registrar is dropping. At least that's what I got from the answers above.

Thanks everyone for the detailed replies!

If it's a must have domain you should backorder at all three in order to take care of the very few instances where the associated capturer doesn't capture the domain. It won't cost you any more. But in most cases the dropcatcher associated with that registrar will capture the domain (probably 95% of the time).
