Hi, there's a .com about to drop in a few days. A decade ago, I would have gone to Snap/NJ and there was a pretty good chance I'd catch it for a small fee. It seems now there are a lot of new drop catchers, where if you bid too early, it draws attention to the name and then ends up in a public auction - something I want to avoid.
What's the best to to try and guarantee success of catching a .com but without drawing much attention that I'm bidding/interested in a certain name? Thanks.

.com drop list is public. All domains are monitored by hundred of investors. So impossible that a "good" domains is noticed only by you so it will go on auction (public or private depends on the catcher).
On the other hand you will not have competitor for a specific domain that fit only for your needs.
In the end it is possible that someone who works in the company is intrigued by your domain but this is unlikely considering that hundreds of domains are backordered every day

Offer the seller a price when someone owns it. ty.

Don't bid and just register it. If everyone did this there would be no competition at the drop-catch only first come first serve at release. Obviously this opportunity is a rarity if at all but there is no guarantee at catching a domain ever unless you were the only person and there is no way of ever knowing.

There is always the "sniper" method like in auctions, waiting till the last minute but there could still be another buyer somewhere using a different service that placed a backorder.

Thanks all. Yes, it's a pretty niche name, but it's catchy enough someone else would go for it. I think I will add it to my cart at the last minute on Snap and hope for the best. I suppose I'd rather be in an auction with one or two others (or just myself) rather than not be there at all.

Good luck and prepare for a bidding war

If you placed a backorder for a domain that is deleting on snapnames and dropcatch, how would others know? I don't see dropcatch snapnames / namejet showing number of bidders for deleting names.

I think the difference is that if you are the *only* bidder on Snap/NJ, the domain is safely yours. If you're the only bidder on DropCatch, I'm pretty sure they auction it anyway, bringing attention to it -- so for that reason I'd avoid DropCatch entirely

If you are the only bidder on dropcatch it does not go to auction just like with SN. It is important that you order on both because dropcatch themselves buys names and they pick up a lot of them. If you order there at full price (59) they will not compete with you so you avoid them grabbing it for HD.

Oh wow, I didn't know that- thanks, I would have skipped them entirely. That's great then, I will back order on both platforms and hope that I'm the sole bidder on of them. Thank you.

If it’s a domain name that has even a remote chance of real value, don’t fool yourself but rather start preparing yourself because it’s going to auction. Backorder it now through every sources you have accounts with so you’re ensured to be included when it goes to auction. If the auction price is within reason a day before auction end, wait to place a snipe bid with the max amount you’re willing to pay during the last minute before auction ends.

If it’s a domain you really want and just have to own, if the domain’s current bid price on the day the auction ends hasn’t jumped to something like 75% or more over the max amount you’re will to pay, when you place your bid during the last minute, think of that maximum dollar amount you and your mind have set in stone the past couple day while waiting for the auction to end. Once you’re thinking of that amount, add another roughly 30%-40% to it. That’s the amount you want to snipe bid with. If you’re not out bid right away, or during those seconds before the auction ends, you’ll have yourself the domain you always wanted. Good luck.

Some really great advice on how to handle the auction stage - thanks NameVP
