I'm interested in purchasing a domain name from someone who I contacted through whois. They say they may sell but have not suggested a price yet.

What should I realistically expect to pay??

Without giving away the name:

It is a person's name (ie not generic or product related)
It has 19,500 with extension on Overture
Alexa of 1,030,000
Archive.org shows no matches.

I'd like to know what people think about the anomolies in OVT and Alexa? I think this is because this is a 'new' person to come on the scene so does this make sense?

How much would a name sell for with OVT with that much?
Sorry to be vague . .

Thanks,

Charlie

You need to try and get them to name a price first. If you offer $2000 and they would have been happy with $200, you'll never know.

I am so very, very new around but even I would agree with that

Let us know how it goes

If they have any sense at all I would say you would be lucky to get a name in this type of senario for anywhere in the $xxx, xxx range. Considering a name such as loans.com only has a OV of 6676

People searching for loans and people searching a name like Bob are two entirely different things :) All traffic is not equal.

I'm very aware of that - I just hope the seller isn't.

The only thing effecting this is the fact that is could be 'seasonal' traffic. This means that the person may go out of favour at some point and clearly the name is not as generic as a product - ie, how can you profit from owning geogebush.com (which is not the name by the way :) )

Also, how can you check past OVT scores. How will I know if this traffic is due to this person or if it would be high anyway?

What price would you pay without even thinking twice for a name with OVT with ext of 19,500?

is it santa.com?

haha

not that seasonal - more like a fashion in sport/music/film etc

I'd personally pay anywhere from 1 to several thousand but it's hard to speculate without knowing the domain name. The best advice I can give you at this stage is not to get your hopes up. The owner is likely to come back with a ridiculously high asking price.

I agree completely and I know they'll be aware of the value.

I just hold out that they may not?!
There domain doesn't resolve - there's nothing on it
He uses an aol email addy

In my optimistic sense this tells me that he may not know as much about the name as I do.

I'll post on here what he asks for it when I know so we can see. Recently I've contacted alot of domain owners (some for sale and some not openly) and asked for prices. A couple have been ok, but 95% know less than me, but price the name far higher than market value. One stated $200,000 for a name with no traffic and maybe, possibly, maybe in his wildest dreams an end user would come along and pay that, but he's gonna be waiting a long time!!!

I would have valued his name at $5000 max

You get a lot of that. They read about the old sales of business.com and the like and say "well business.com sold for $7.5 million and I own businessonline.com so it must be worth at least $3 million" :)

Well considering the overture for Jesus with extension is only 1570 it's clear that this person is more famous than Jesus Christ. This means your name is one of the Beatles, since they are the only ones who claimed to be more famous then Jesus Christ. :)

I have no idea what you should realistically pay because realistically this name should be parked or developed making millions. I'd start low and work your way up. Worst thing that can happen is he gives you a nasty reply which will give you a good feel for what he's expecting. I can't tell you what I'd pay without thinking twice because I always think at least three times.

Good advice! I'll wait and see what he says but the overture score is ridiculous! Could it be an error?

How do I check what is has been in previous months? Or what other ways of checking the traffic are there other than those I have mentioned.

Also google "first second name" is 833,000
OVT with ext .net is 234

.de is available. All other extensions have gone.

It has 19,500 with extension on Overture! I think this is great! Take earthlink.com for example, it has 65101 results with the keyword earthlink.com!

Did you check OVT a few days ago before the June update?

I thought it was 15,000 but I can't check now can I?

Not that I know of. You can't at OVT's site anyway.

I can't check now can I?
To the best of my knowledge, no. That's another one of those areas of research where there is an empty gap and no tool available to fill it with.

What about the accuracy of OVT then.

If you see my point - I don't want to offer a load of cash for a name based PURELY on the OVT result.
I know the 'name' is popular but that's all!

What else can I do?
