A friend runs a company in India since decades, and has a registered trademark since many years. Her father ran the business till a couple years ago. They had a dotcom website with the brand name as the domain. Somehow didn't renew the domain in time a couple years ago, and it expired.

She took over the business and now they used another, longer domain and created a new website on it. The previous domain is held by someone who's asking for $1500 since. Is there a way to get the domain name back without paying $1500?

Yep, your friend might actually be able to snag the domain back without shelling out that $1500-especially if she’s got a legit trademark and the current owner’s just sitting on it in bad faith. Since the domain lines up with her established brand, she’s got a pretty strong case under Indian trademark law and the UDRP. If the current holder’s just trying to flip it for profit or stir up confusion, she can hit them with a legal notice or even file a UDRP complaint. Time’s kinda key here-waiting too long could weaken her position. Best move? Probably start with a lawyer-drafted demand letter and see where that gets her.
