I was able to reg. a country name under its own ccTLD 4 days ago and it already showed up in whois the day after registration that I was the owner. Today I received an email stating that the domain is too generic and took it away from me.

Can they do that?

Yes they can as long as it is in their TERMS OF USE.

If it is not then I would say you could argue the point.

Go ahead and share the name - read most agreements and you'll see that almost any registry and/or registrar can cancel any name it wants to for any reason (Stated in terms, not saying they could legally back it up if push came to shove.).

Looks like everyone has clearly made it open that it's allowed, but if you MUST have it talk to a lawyer for legal advise.

Note saying that even if you do contact a lawyer you well stand a chance at getting but always helps.

Allan the domain is SPAIN.ES
I called the registrar and told me that .es didn't approved the registration. I told the sales rep that my name already showed up in whois info. I was even able to change the DNS.

That's an irrelevant question, really. What you're probably asking is is it legal.

Which it is, anyway. Whether it's immoral, unethical, whatever depends on the
side of the fence you choose to be on.

Hmmm.......not too familiar with the .es rules but I know for the .de there's a physical requirement of presence for the reg or admin. I know the registries will still let you register via a proxy (usually), but not wanting any trouble down the road re a technicality I have my aunt in Germany as my admin on my .de domains.
