quick question:

i am watching a domain (reg. at godaddy)
it expires soon

i think the owner is DONE WITH IT, and will be letting it expire. (fingers crossed)

here's the question part: :)

if a domain expires WITHOUT a backorder of some kind, then it goes thru a "whole big process of this and that etc." before it goes back in to the "available pile."

HOWEVER: if a domain expires, and it DOES HAVE a backorder on it, do you GET IT RIGHT AWAY? <<

* assuming it doesn't go to auction. (it's a very LOCAL, small area domain - probably will draw ZERO attention - zero (P)(R), no traffic etc.)

what's the scoop?

THANKS FOLKS!

Hi,

If nobody bought it at tdnam, and you have placed a backorder on it, you will get it about 41 days after the expiration date (right before the redemption period starts).

You'll receive an email from GoDaddy telling you the backorder will be locked about 25 or 30 days after the expiration date (1 day after it passed through tdnam). If the owner doesn't renew it, you'll get the domain. If you didn't receive an email about the backorder lock, somebody probably bought it at tdnam.

thanks flussie,

so, if it EXPIRES, does NOT get purchased at TDNAM, (gets ZERO interest anywhere), the owner STILL HAS 41 days to renew (after expiry)? does GD keep sending emails to remind them after expiry?

now that's a "grace period." :)

thanks again,

mike

I'm not sure if its 41 days, I thought they reduced the wait some, but they certainly do send out renewal notices after the name has expired. I've sometimes waited right till the very end when they send the " Cancelled " email notice, at this point you can still renew it but you best make up your mind quickly or else...

thanks all,

i guess if the name is NOT RENEWED on the DAY BEFORE the expiry day (whois), i will buy a backorder and see what happens. :gl:

will advise how it goes...

thanks,

Backordering from GoDaddy is a mistake for a decent name. Here's why :

As mentioned, all of the unrenewed GoDaddy domains go through the TDNam.com auction. If you put in a backorder for it through GoDaddy, you are really putting a $10 bid through TDNam.com (and it will show up with a $10 bid at TDNam.com). This is a bad idea, since a lot of people focus on names with bids. If someone comes along and outbids your $10 "bid" (which was actually your GoDaddy backorder), you lose out.

Its better to go directly through TDNam.com, wait until less than a minute to go and put in your bid then.
