Can someone please tell us know from experience, can a shared hosting site (ex: hostgator) handle visitors of 100 visitors a minute for a minisite of just 10 pages with only text and just a php button for addthis.com (overall website size is 200 kb and each page size approx. is 20 kb)? Even during sudden traffic of about 300 visitors a minute from digg or other places?

I think that web hosting company which specialize mostly in dedicated server providing can work out some suggestions for you. But in that case such solution will be very expensive for you. What kind of budget you have?

With just static pages and no database, yes.

Does having a custom search function counts as a database. (ex: someone search for answers in my website by searching on my custom google search on my website, and recieve pages relative to his search)

A custom Google search is processed by Google's servers, so it wouldn't affect your hosting accounts usage.

$10/month

Yes that is not enough for VPS and of course that is not enough for dedicated server.
I assume you will need to find large web hosting account.

As long as your coding is optimized, they should be able to handle that.

Okay thanks for all the info which really helps!

Just one last ?, even if you have intensedebate installed (IntenseDebate comments enhance and encourage conversation on your blog or website), it will still work out fine, right? And if anyone can tell me from experience, that will greatly help!

IntenseDebate's comment system is generated by their servers, so your account shouldn't be affected with it either.

I think that is hosted on completely different servers.

Shared hosting did not handle the huge traffic. For this you must upgrade your account to vps or dedicated hosting.

I think that it will be also a good idea to contact them directly and see what they will offer you.

To be on the safe side, I think you should go with a VPS, which would give you more flexibility on resource usage. And such high traffic, I believe, would be resource intensive.

Since VPS has had much better uptime, is much faster, and gives you much more freedom, since you can install any panel you want, it will be a good solution for you.
