I was hoping that someone could answer this question for me.

I am developing a fantasy football site and I was wondering about putting other companies links on my site.

I am not planning on making any money from their links, I am just simply making links to point to these companies fantasy pages. Basically free advertising for them. Just redirecting traffic with their flashy logos.

ESPN NFL NBC CBS YAHOO and FOX

Is this okay?

as long as you never make any money.. or place ads on the site.. you can do anything you want... as long as its a FAN PAGE and not a MONEY MAKER!

That's what I thought. I just didn't want someone getting mad and throwing TM'd emails at me. Thanks bro !!

Look Before You Link

Visit each logo's site and read their linking policies. If they have none, then just ask them first.

To see an example, visit www.fanniemae.com, click the "Legal" link, and then look for the "linking agreement" link. You can also click any web page's "site map" link and then search for "linking agreement."

That's not true. It's fair-use if he shows the logos in conjuction with a link to them. He isn't profiting off the logos if he has ads on his site as well as their logos. If he states they are "partners" or "affiliates" of some kind that's a problem unless he is.

However let's say he has a wordpress blog and he posts about an upcoming Coca-Cola product..he can use the coke logo as the link.

I am developing a fantasy football site and I was wondering about putting other companies links on my site.

An appropriate and imho legal fair-use would be telling people to get stats at ESPN and creating a button out of their logo to use as the hyperlink.

I am just linking their logos with their sites. Some people that come to my site might not know about the different sport channels fantasy pages and I am strictly redirecting my viewers to their pages.

What if you are reviewing a company and using their logo? EG: What do you like better, coke or pepsi (and logos, which could link to their sites)? And get people to vote, publishing the results and comments, OR doing your own review: "overall coke is better because it has more sugar".

Is this legal? What if both reviews were nice, and did not compare them to each other... just listed impressions about both?

Just curious if anyone knows the legalities of this.

you need to consult their invidual sites on how they want sites to link back to them and regarding their logo, as for my contrib.
here's espn
Except as ESPN/Starwave Partners doing business as ESPN Internet Ventures ("EIV") may authorize elsewhere, non-EIV web sites may display the ESPN.com logo provided above. By downloading the Logo to your web site, you agree to be bound by these Policies:
You may only display the Logo on your web site and it must always be an active link to the ESPN.com home page at http://www.espn.com.

You may not modify or alter the Logo in any manner or distort its appearance.

Your Web page title and other trademarks or logos must appear at least as prominently as the Logo. You may not display the Logo in any manner that implies sponsorship, endorsement, or license by EIV.

You may not display the Logo on any site that disparages EIV or any affiliated company of EIV or any of their products or services, infringes EIV intellectual property or other rights, or violates any state, federal, or international law.

These Policies do not grant a license or any other right to EIV's logos or trademarks. EIV reserves the right at its sole discretion to terminate or modify permission to display the Logo at any time.

EIV DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, RELATED TO THE LOGO, INCLUDING WARRANTIES AGAINST INFRINGEMENT OR TITLE.

That's funny...as if their TOS is the law. It's not. If I decide to make a parody site and use a distorted logo it's legal no matter WTF they say.

Well look at news.google.com

They use company logos all the time, as well as other news sites. Wether knowingly or unknowingly because it seems to be done autimatically.
