Can I have a dot (.) in my domain name.. or would I need to own the "core" domain for it like Own "Craiglist" and then be able to own/add

newyork.craigslist.org

I can see already how my post is confusing...

Lets see. Could I register

xxx.yyyy.com - as is without owning either xxx.com or yyyy.com

does this make sense. Basically can I have a dot in my domain name?

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Yes and no. Yes, you can have a dot in your domain name. All domain names have dots in them already infact. Dots divide up the different levels of a domain name.

But no, if you want xxx.yyyy.com you need to own yyyy.com. When you own a domain name, you can create any third level domain name you want.

...or 4th, 5th, 6th, etc. If you owna domain in the second level, you own everything that can be made to the left of it.

If you owned truck.com, you could also create cement.truck.com, used.cement.truck.com, rental.used.cement.truck.com. However, most people don't get much into third level domains and beyond, except for the semi-default www subdomain.

To that end, there is potential for revenue with subdomaining if you own the right domains... e.g. the owner of 5FM.com could lease subdomains to radio stations like 99.5FM.com, etc.

I wish I owned some!

What you need to do here is register www.craiglist.org
Then create a subdomain called newyork
Then you'll have http://newyork.craiglist.org

You are talking about "Subdomain" service. yes.. you can. You can have name.domain.com or name.name.domain.com ... after domain.com you can make anything. But you need to own this domain

I think what he meant was could he register bob.google.com as a .com domain, even if you didn't own google.com.

And the answer is no - you can only create subdomains on a domain you already own.

After you own yyyy.com or whatever, you will not have to pay to create xxxxx.yyyy.com.

Not exactly true, you can own subdomains off of domains you don't own. Many companies like CentralNic.com make this their business.

For example, even though CentralNic owns "us.com", someone here on the forum owns Banks.us.com.

CentralNic allowes you to buy subdomains of the following:
yourname.ae.org United Arab Emirates ยฃ32.50
yourname.br.com Brazil ยฃ32.50
yourname.cn.com China ยฃ32.50

True, However, you don't own it in the same sense as with domain under control of ICANN. You are subject to whatever agreement or contract you have with the second level domain owner. not quite the same legal rights as with ICANN and an accredited registrar.
