When buying an expired domain that is available to register at any registrar, are we getting any age related benefits, or does the clock start over again when it goes to the open market.

I am thinking in terms of advertising the domain for sale, such as can I call the domain "aged" at this point in a sales letter??

Reason is that I am looking at some sites that show when the name expired and how old it is, but wasn't sure if it goes back to open market if it still holds the "age" benefit.

If the domain is purchased via a pre-release expired auction like GoDaddy, NameJet, etc. then it retains the original registration date.

If the domain actually deletes then the original registration date is reset.

you could say things like it was "previously" registered in whatever year but i wouldn't recommend it. you don't want people to think its aged when its not.

In this day, any domain that even has some kind of value in it, will never remain unregged. The fact that out of 12 billion domainers out there scanning expired domains 24/7, and nobody wants to reg it except you, it probably says that this "aged domain" description is not really relevant. The other guys are having a hard time reselling it, that's why you found it in the expired bin. It probably would qualify as a "brandy" domain, but you should treat it as a lottery ticket.
