Buying new processor

Hey all,
I need advice on buying a new CPU, I'm upgrading, of course.

I'm going for a dual-core 2.2GHz+ one, I currently have a 'AMD Sempron 2400+' and quite frankly, it's shit.
I've had it for over 3 years and never realised how pathetic it is - apart from it, my computer is fairly high spec.

I was wondering simply, if these processors are interchangable - as in will an Intel processor like this be able to replace the old one?

Please also post links to compatible processors under £40 (around $75) if you have the time.

Thanks

Well,

Amd and Intel are not interchangeable do to socket differences...what socket is your motherboard? To answer your question no you would not be able to take out the amd processor and slap in the intel processor. Let me know what socket your cpu fits into and I will find you a better processor!

Hi both - thanks for the replies.

I have a AM2 socket.

I have already added more RAM - 4gb I think on dual channel, I had a quick bit of research (late) last night and found that having big RAM isn't all that good without a similar standard processor

Hey, the fastest processor that you can get on your current mother board (AM2) is the AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor.

Why go intel when AMD processors give almost the same performance at a significantly lower cost?
At 70$ the Phenom 9850 Black Edition 2.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core would be a good choice . I'd add the corsair H50 and do some over clocking on the black edition cpu.
