General Manager Leads Rebuilding of Animal Shelter, Firm Contributes Computers to Help Rescue, Care for and Find Owners of Starving Pets
BALTIMORE, MD (September 21, 2005) – BulkRegister, the world’s leading business registrar, today announced that Eric Rice, General Manager for BulkRegister, is on the scene in Mississippi and New Orleans to spearhead the rebuilding of the Humane Society of South Mississippi’s (HSSM) animal shelter, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The HSSM asked Rice to oversee the shelter’s reconstruction and assist with efforts to rescue the thousands of helpless, starving pets that were reluctantly left behind by people fleeing the hurricane. To raise awareness about the plight of abandoned animals in the hurricane zone, and to solicit more funds to support their rescue, Rice is filing daily progress reports from the field on a blog, located at www.ericsdogblog.com. The blog also contains links for those who would like to contribute to animal rescue efforts, or buy items directly from the Gulfport, Mississippi Home Depot that HSSM has on its list of urgent needs.
The situation in the region is dire. National Guard units in the area report their troops are haunted by the “eerie” howling of dogs and cats left locked in thousands of homes by people who thought they would be returning home shortly after the hurricane subsided. According to psychologists, the loss of a pet ranks in the top five of life events that cause people major stress and depression. Many hurricane evacuees, already traumatized by their losses, are literally begging relief workers to save the animals they left behind.
“I believe saving these animals is crucial to the ‘emotional’ survival of the people who have lost everything,” said Eric Rice, General Manager of BulkRegister. “We desperately need everyone’s help to buy supplies to find, transport, house, feed, care for and locate the owners of these helpless, starving animals. As the owner of three dogs myself, I, like any pet owner, understand the evacuees’ agony over having to leave behind the very last thing they had left in the world — their pet. Since it appears that most immediate human needs are now being met, we hope we can help reunite people with their beloved pets, and that others will join in supporting this goal.”
BulkRegister is also sending computers to the HSSM. The Company previously contributed $10,000 to the Red Cross to assist with overall disaster relief efforts.
