Hey NamePros,
I’ve been a longtime reader and recently decided to jump in and join the conversation.
Over the past year, I’ve been working on a niche digital marketplace specifically built for the gaming industry — think activation keys, in-game items, accounts, and services. While developing the platform, one of the key challenges we faced early on was choosing the right domain name — both for branding and for long-term SEO.
1. Gamers Love Simplicity.
We tested names with complex spellings, slang, and abbreviations — they performed poorly. Our final name is short, easy to spell, and works across multiple game genres.
2. “.com” Still Wins — But It’s Not Always a Dealbreaker.
We initially tried a domain hack (like a .gg or .shop), but the bounce rate was slightly higher. Once we switched to a short, pronounceable .com, trust metrics and conversion rates improved.
3. Keywords Help — But Only If Brandable.
We debated using terms like “key,” “coin,” or “loot” in the domain. What we learned: partial-match domains helped with early SEO but lacked long-term branding potential unless paired with a strong identity.
4. Typos = Lost Sales.
We tracked direct-visit analytics and saw that even one extra character or uncommon word meant lost traffic. Clear, intuitive domains win — even in a niche like gaming.
I’m not here to promote anything — just wanted to share this in case anyone here works on niche marketplaces or is curious about how domain selection affects trust, SEO, and growth, especially in younger verticals like gaming.
I’d love to hear your thoughts —
Glad to be part of the community.

- Any TLDs that have surprised you lately in terms of performance or resale?
