Brands and Names Vs. Current Events

Buying Domain names with name brands, people name etc is not a good idea from what I read.

What about current events? A election, a ban on pitbulls, a hurricane etc

It's okay. Rick Schwartz, one of the most successful domainers, is still buying these types of domains.

The only concern is ethics, not laws. Many people feel contempt toward those who profit from others' misfortunes: hurricanes, earthquakes, shootings, etc., but if you buy those domains for a good cause (redirect them to creditable disaster relief or charity websites), then it's okay.

It's okay if the name is common.

Stay far away from these.
