I see the term 'brandable' being tossed around on stupid sounding names that have little to no value. I also see people attempting to sell 'brandable' names for large sums of money.

Can someone explain this to me? It seems like an asinine concept.

There will always be people that abuse the definition of words like "Brandable" or "Premium"

It just is what it is.

Premium is much more abused than Brandable imo. There are different variations for Brandable, names that Brand Bucket sells are Brandables, a lot of them Made Up Pronounceables M.U.P.

Then others consider a name like SuperSeats.com which MostWantedDomains.com sold for $48,000.

A generic word not used by its real definition Amazon.com will get the brandable tag.

But yes when someone says Cuoxs.com it is a brandable, well it would be hard to get that brand to sink in with the public. Ease of spelling, memorability are what make a good brand, that little company in Mountain View, California has had some success, I think its pronounced Google. When you reach the status that your name becomes an action like "Just Google it" Then you have made it to the top of the Brand mountain.

I see a lot of misleading terms in this industry - Some call dubious domains brandable and others trying to sell bad domains for big money with the term premium - In the end it's all about your own ability to distinguish between what makes a good domain or what makes a domain a nice brandable and when it comes to brandable there is no magic formula.

IMO the more blatant abuse is the term "pronounceable". Every day on NP I see people selling things like this:

QXSJ.... "a pronounceable 4L.com"

As one naming guru once said about some names/naming: That isn't naming. That's just typing.

But: If you have a strong enough underlying 'New' (as in 'newly interesting/attractive') business concept that you're applying the typing to, then Google, Xerox, .... can work.

But you pretty much always need that strong underlying new business concept for that to happen. It creates a new product or service category, that helps people file the name/typing away in their minds.

A brandable is a short name that is easy to pronounce. Usually a made up word since now all regular english words seem to be called "premiums" no matter how obscure they are.

Many here have extended the definition of a brandable to include "easy to pronounce once I explain to you how it should be pronounced"

I always thought that the term brandable in domaining was a fairly new coined term so I did a quick search to see if I could find the earliest use of the term in domaining and came across this. I am sure some of the old schoolers can pinpoint the first use of the term in domaining.

By the way the highest offer received in the post for Yuup.com was 30 bucks.

"Premium" has become so abused so, so bad. Here at NP it's gotten to the point where when I see "premium domains" it in a sale thread title it's actually a sign that there are there no premium names, and that they are actually all probably pretty awful...

Yuup doesn't rhyme with cup. It rhymes with "save your money".

I seem to recall that brandable names at one time were coined "vanity" names by many domainers.

Actually its not bad. YUUP! would be an extended slang version of YEP! which is a funnier version of YES! The guy from Storage Wars trademarked the term YUUUP! for his auction company. It's definitely worth a lot more than 30 bucks that's for sure.

When I started publishing the weekly brandable domain name sales report on dngeek.com I set the following criteria for what makes a domain brandable in my opinion:
  • No numeric domains
  • No 2L & 3L domains (as they are a breed on their own)
  • No one word dictionary domains (in any language). This means the sale of Ingles.com is not included for example.
  • Unless the word has an alternative spelling such as Krash.com or Banyo.com
  • No 4L acronyms unless they are pronounceable and used as a brand name instead of a acronym such as Hulu or Elto.com
  • Two keyword domains can qualify. SharpMind.com for example is a brandable domain name imo while SharpKnifes.com isnt
  • Variation on words are allowed, such as Tourister.com
