Brakes Gave Out

I'll tell you what, there is -nothing- that will scare the bejeesus out of you faster than putting on the brakes while you are driving, and nothing happens, you don't slow down.

Jeeeseopete, I hammered the emergency brake down and missed smacking into a car by about a foot.

Whew!!! Thank goodness I was not going fast, I live in a small town and you really can't go above 20-25mph here. I was out on the highway driving to another city yesterday, thank goodness it did not go out then!

lucky one, being there myself and had to use the emergency brake and shift the gear into the lowest position to avoid a crash, there is nothing scarier......

Good to hear it did the job!

I do hope I'll never be put in that situation. I'm not very sure that, given the surprise, I'll think of using the emergency break fast enough.

ouch luckily I have not had them go completely out just got super duper soft

but when I 1st started driving I had a 66 chevy and had the steering wheel shafts rag joint break
talk about scary it happened twice once was at 5mph+- and wasnt a big deal till i got hit from behind while i was under the hood but luckily i didn't get hurt just a few bruises!
but a few months later it happened again but this time i was going 60mph+- and with all drum breaks it can be a mess at that speed with no steering at all but I was able to stop without hitting anyone / anything or anyone hitting me
so i parked it and sold it

Thanks God you have quick reflexes and can react/think under pressure; that story ends a lot differently for people who panic and hesitate in sudden situations. Glad to hear you avoided an accident and glad to hear it didn't happen on the highway.

I'll share my story with you
I had already 9 cars, and in the beginning of my driving career some of them were in really bad condition,
I like to buy things by myself so when I got my driving license, I didn't asked my parents to buy me car, and at this time I was non working student so I had no cash, once I saw partypoker promo, something like free $100 to play and I bought my first car from money that I earned playing texas holdem :D
That was not big money so the car was cheap, almost half year I was riding car without speed meter, hand brake, first gear and reverse, with broken passenger seat etc. But, I have good memories with this car. Then my uncle decided to give me his old car, but this car kept breaking down, so I bought next car and my uncle car was waiting parked till he will come to get it back, that was almost 4 months because my uncle lives 200 kilometers from us and he had no time for this. So we started this car after 4 months of non usage, and the only gear that was working was 4th gear and it had almost no brakes, I remember when I was driving to the gas station starting from 4th gear and without brakes :D that was crazy, and guess what? My uncle drove to his home 200 kilometers with this car in this condition, with only 4th gear working :D
