For those of you who have not been living under a rock, there's a new upstart competitor to X (formerly twitter) and Threads: BlueSky. BlueSky recently hit 25 million users, and is currently the fastest growing social media platform. So why BlueSky? It offers a better algorithm for reaching out to and engaging with more people, more regulation against trolling, and fewer bots are some of the draws to this new platform.
But if you've used the platform you may have noticed that the default handle looks a bit...off.
Rather than @Username like on X and Threads, the (default) handle is @username.bsky.social.
This is because there's serious infrastructure behind it, and every handle is an app under AT protocol (compare to e.g. the HTTPS protocol) and you can do a lot of interesting things with the app they create for you.
So why am I bringing this up?
Well, Washington Post switched their handle from @washingtonpost.bsky.social to @washingtonpost.com, how? There are plenty of YouTube shorts going through the processes step by step (you just have to add a DNS record).
But Washington Post is not the only ones who've done this. A lot of artists are using their portfolio sites as handles, bloggers their blogging sites and so on. It looks cleaner, and it's a way to advertise your website.
So we might see a revigorated interest for domain names.
