EMOJIS IN INTERNET DOMAINS? ICANN MIGHT NOT ALLOW IT

Emojis have been flooding digital conversations via text message, social media, and email. But an advisory committee to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is discouraging another potential use: in top-level domain names.

Article focuses on next gTLD round, and notes recommends against currently.

Board Cahir

ICANN board chair Steve Crocker told Bloomberg BNA May 30 that the board will strongly consider that advice.

The committee “has written a very cogent and readable explanation of the problems that may occur if emojis are used in domain names,” he said. “Their advice will be given strong consideration in the formulation of the next round of top level domain names.”

It won't be long before there is an emoji search engine that translates punycode in to emoji 's automatically which would effectively make emoji domains a visual alternative to numerical or alphabetical domains which would be great for brands as brand owners would then be able to have their brand logo as a one character domain name whereby customers would see only a business's logo with its tld and click on its logo which would also take much business from gtlds

If emoji domains were to be the next big thing in domain investing etc this would be like a recession to domain investors with huge domain name portfolios that are not emoji domains

im with you until the last paragraph, emojis grow the whole pie, not a take from existing pie game in my opinion.

at any point in domain investing there are declining themes, maturing themes, alwasy working themes and new themes, .ws emoji domains dont have to replace .com to work - but they do help us all in restoring some power of the domain name in the search box - independent of any social network or search engine.

It won't be long before people buy an emoji domain for its punycode and recycle the emoji and design a new one and replace the previous emoji with the newly designed emoji whilst using the existing punycode

It will only take fb if they haven't already to buy a punycode and add the fb or Facebook logo to the punycode and then? I the world will want an emoji domain name

Emoji domains are cool, however it will take time before it will be accepted by business. Not all emoji works in all platform, ie an old flower emoji does not work under Android, nor iphone. Alphabet that are use to bulit a domain name are standard, and can be remembered easily, Therefore a domain even with 13 characters as can be accepted by the business. In the other hand emoji characters are not necessary standard across platforms. An emoji of single character might be valuable, however , emojis more than 3 characters will confuse people what sort of business does it represent. The last thing, emoji domain extension now is practically only .ws, if ever in the future .com releases emoji domains, .ws emoji will face the same fyuture with the existing TLDs.
