For an end user it will be hard to get a site ranked because all the other sites will be .edu research websites. I notice even the sponsored ads are .orgs. Reg fee

It's one of those reg fee but worth holding on for the right opportunity type of domain. Would a research firm in the right niche find it useful? I'm sure they would and I'd disagree that the edu is worth more even considering the academic nature of the domain.

Not worth more, just the existing sites will all be .edu or .org with a lot of authority behind them.
