It seems to me people reg names for the sake of regging them because they are available and alot of them have no reasonable mobile applications. Too many people are making domain reg companies rich by regging useless names. Its beyond me why people waste so much $ on mobis that are basically garbage.

I understand where you are coming from especially in terms of obscure brandables and generic words with zero search volume. It's not a uniquely mobi situation, though mobi has it's share of terrible regs as well.

Sadly, it seems every extension is plagued with more useless regs than potentially profitable ones. What is one to do with sex425.com? I suppose that gets tons of type-ins? Countless newcomers think that because sex.com is worth millions, that somehow sex###.com or sexsexsexsexsex.com (that's 5 sex's! actually registered 10 years ago btw) are worth something?

I guess if you want to develop them, you may achieve moderate success -- example: sexsexsexsex.com, however I'd prefer to just start from a half decent name and build on it from there. Seems kind of stupid to make a killer website and have a horrible, confusing domain name for it -- not to say that it can't be successful, but that it makes things all that much more difficult. I type in flicker.com all the time when I mean to type in flikr.com. How many genuine customers do you think they lose out on because of this on a daily basis? I'd venture to guess it's no small number.

That is true in any extension. Look at all the crap names in the appraisal thread and most of them are not .mobi.

It's a tough thing to know which names are good and which are not, because there are so many variables. Being fairly new to domaining, I would say it takes time to learn and to gain experience in choosing names.

I know I don't have the best .mobi's in the world, but I think I've done pretty good for having limited experience.

visionedger,

Maybe you could think of some way to help those with limited experience?

Hey, I am one of them. I would certainly need some help there. :imho:

I think it's important to help each other. Domaining is not easy. In fact, I have found it to be one of the most challenging things I've ever done. A good command of the language does help, however.

That being said, knowing which names are good and which ones aren't is a skill.

We are here to help each other. Let's get to work.

I certainly do share your view.

Well this forum is a great way to start, one of the biggest thing a newcomer needs to learn is to stay away from TM'ed names, it's just a complete waste of time and money!
There are some serious domainers here, learn from them! they spend many hours behind the pc looking, looking, for that domain. When they do sell they don't demand big $$$$$$ (did i miss a few$?) because realistically they won't get that price anyway

Like many have said here, get some names in the secondary market! Good luck

Take myself for example. I am registering legitimate one worders right now like pounce.mobi. To me, it will have value in the future above reg fee as long as mobi becomes widespread. I tend to think of what value my regs would have in .com because I see the potential for .mobi to be near the same level someday. If mobi bombs, then everyones regs are just about worthless so it's a chance I am taking.

Let's not forget how fast names are being snapped up. Sure I see loads of garbage, but there are still descent pickens out there as is proved everyday here at namepros by the more experienced. Trust your instincts and have faith in your investments as one day soon we shall realize nice profits :imho: .

this is one of the best thread ive seen here in NP
i think u should take these as advices, IMHO:

"It seems to me people reg names for the sake of regging them because they are available and alot of them have no reasonable mobile applications. Too many people are making domain reg companies rich by regging useless names." (VisionEdger)

"I guess if you want to develop them, you may achieve moderate success -- example: sexsexsexsex.com, however I'd prefer to just start from a half decent name and build on it from there. Seems kind of stupid to make a killer website and have a horrible, confusing domain name for it -- not to say that it can't be successful, but that it makes things all that much more difficult." (Reece)

"It's a tough thing to know which names are good and which are not, because there are so many variables. Being fairly new to domaining, I would say it takes time to learn and to gain experience in choosing names. I think it's important to help each other. Domaining is not easy. "Well this forum is a great way to start..." (panman)

Garett200 said one thing that i think it is VERY important that is "good command of the language"... as some people know im brazilian and sometimes even for me that speak and write a good english (correct me if im wrong, LOL) is not dificult choose a word but it is difficult to know if the word is good for the extension. There is also the culture and habits (each country/region) has yours (e.g. brazilian OVT ringtones is better than ringtone; in US ringtone is better than ringotnes).

another important point, in this case talking about .mobi, is that mobi is a unique extension, u have to think of it in a cell phone (thats what it was made for of course) but many people is thinking of .mobi as a "common" extension (sorry if my explanation isnt good). u wont use it ALWAYS for surfing when u dont need to; u will use ur PC, desktop...

well, to learn i read about domains, ask for advice here in NP and im in NP when always that is possible to me.
