Beware "online translators"

A couple of days ago, I was looking for something to register and I discovered "xxxxxx.com" wasn't registered. It had been an old site that was discontinued in 2005, according to archive.org

After Googling the domain name, I found it had some usage in the Dutch language. I used several "online translators" to find out what it meant.

Today, I discover that it was registered on Oct 20, 2007. Today. It is already parked. The company that registered it has a website and a statement on it that they "use automated linguistic software" to register domain names.

Hmmmmm.

It looks like one of the translators might be used for spy purposes.

I was advised to use http://www.google.com/translate_t in the future.

Just a heads up for everyone.

Regards,

Sags

Wait a few days and it will be available to register.

I don't understand, you typed in the full domain with extension into a translator? Even if any "spying" was done I highly doubt it would be at an online translator. More likely wherever you checked it's availability. If I were you I'd edit the domain out of the post and just wait a few days for it to drop, like jdk said. It looks like it's registered by a known taster, so as long as it doesn't get any traffic you've got a good shot at picking it up.

Yep sounds like the registrar was curious as to it's traffic. Just leave it be for a few days and recheck it and should be fine.

I guess it's just being tasted? I mean so many people use online translators for so many different purposes.

And you mentioned that it was registered in the past so that probably is the reason. :imho:

Good advice. I edited the domain name out of the post.

The registrar was GoDaddy, so I don't think they are doing domain tasting, but I could be wrong.

I am still pretty sure it was through the "free translator". Too bad I don't know which one it was or I would post it.

Seems to be a common problem with Godaddy

It would appear a number of registrars are having similar problems - dropping searched name lists to tasters perhaps - no surely not. :$:
