What would be the best way to learn to develop websites for parked names when you have never developed any before? Just something easy and simple yet good enough for pointing towards potential sale and maybe some link and banner advertising...especially for a large portfolio.

well, for large portfolios you can pick up bulk pre-made sites cheaply - with content or like a simple lander. you might need a tiny bit of know how to plug your names in and sort hosting (and mightn't make much more than parking). i'm sure there's plenty of guys in the website marketplace happy to help you out.
but if you wanted a bit more tlc approach you could head over to wordpress.org. it's all pretty simple, and you could learn how to make one site you're happy with, then cookie cutter more.
you could have a play at wordpress.com if you want to try first - IMHO getting stuck in and making mistakes is the best way to go.
if you want to build out any of these sites more, i found clicking on people's signatures a good place to start - usually people have their projects incubating there, and a nice way to see things as they grow from rough sketches.

I agree that Wordpress is a great place to start. It gives you just enough control to make it your own but it handles a lot of the design and functional issues for you so you don't have to get bogged down in coding.

Wordpress also allows you the ability to tinker (if you're careful) and I believe that hands on tinkering is the best way to learn. Just dig in and see how moving this effects that, etc.

Once you have something you like, it's easy to duplicate.

I would suggest to head down to your local library or book store and pick up a book on web design, html and css. It is much easier to learn this way when you start.

Learn basic HTML tutorials first to get the hang of it. There are plenty of self taught sites you can use. Learning even just a tad bit and recognizing some patterns can really make a difference.
