Best Way To Promote My New Website ?

So I've created a new website that is like a portal but instead of using text links, it uses minature clipart images and an image map.

If the links sell, I'll have money to put into actual advertising but for now I need to know some ideas how to get the word out. I still haven't officially launched it (I hope to in a week).

So how to promote ?
I figure the usual is posting on forums.
I have a link exchange for the site.
I could email companies or websites that might want to buy links.

I'm hoping the novelty of the idea will be the biggest draw. Any thoughts ?

P.S. If you're using firefox, the counter will be in the wrong spot (still working on this).

thats a nice idea. I do like the clipart better than the actual ads.. keeps things neat and looking good.

I really think you just need to keep posting on forums as those are the internet users who are likely to purchase a clipart piece on your website... Some sort of grand opening press release and alot of digging will help tons!

Get in tight with some social networking and try to start off with as many diggs, bookmarks or mentions as it possible. Hopefully the initial burst of traffic will get some bloggers noticing the site, then you begin the viral linkage.

Post about it and try to generate as much discussion about it as possible in LIVE chatrooms.

This site will be difficult to market unless a you get a viral community interest going. You need to rely on methods that are unconvential if you wish to get it off the ground.

Try to make the purpose of the website clearer to the average visitor, for although it is entirely different, the million dollar homepage style hundreds of images can be confusing.

Search engine wise, you need to get high profile links back to the limited amount of content you have and try to get ranked highly for several high profile keywords in the general field of your site.

Perhaps give away free spots to high profile webloggers or website owners in return for some promotion.
