Best Forum Template?

Hi,

I would like your views on wich forum template is the best one.
phpBB is used almost everywhere but I dont really like it. Is there any substitute? Preferably a free template.

I'm not really sure what you mean. Do you mean good forum scripts? PhpBB is a script, not a template. Are you asking for good templates for phpBB or what kind of forum script we would recommend?

If you are looking for free ones, there is phpBB, MyBB and SMF which are good. If you are looking for one with more features and for a large community then go for vBulletin, it's the best forum software out there but it's not free. It has a license fee.

Well, there is not really a 'best' forumscript.
But a really important thing is: are you willing to pay $50+/year or not?
If no, go with phpBB, SMF or ekinboard.
If yes, I'd recommend vBulletin, but invision is pretty nice as well.

It depends on the skills you have and the forum script you are using. phpBB is my choice. I have 2 IPBs too, but I am a phpBB owner for 4 years now. I got used to modifying the script and the themes. I consider myself quite advanced on this and my forums prove this. So, for me it's the best option.

Out of the box, phpBB is very weak. But there are hundreds of mods to be installed (I have amost all of them downloaded and I installed over 40 now. With the features I think my communities need). I have different sets of mods since my communities are different.

So, this "the best" script discussion has the same answer: "the best script for ME is .." and we all have different admin experience and background.
