You can't compare paid one with free one.

The best for paid one: VBulletin I think
The best for free one: IPB(1.3.1) for me

It's hard to compare any board and say one is better than the other. Above, at least to me, you're comparing apples to oranges with free to paid. IPB has some great features and I use it and love it on my largest site. However, I use MyBB on another site and love it as well. If you want a forum with many mods and a large community behind it then IPB is the way to go - either that or phpBB (free but has security issues from time to time). I'd also look at SMF - it's smaller but growing quickly.

MyBB is good looking, simple, and great if you're just looking for a board without all of the bells and whistles.

I use vBulletin for my UK Domain Name Forum but you need to know HTML and some PHP to get the best from it. It is not for the non-technically minded.

There are mods available so that you can create portal sites and structured link pages.

Takes time and effort but my members much prefer it over PHPBB (which I upgraded from).

The upgrade brought everything through expect PMs.

vBulletin hands down for the purchased options.
For free, I like SMF (simple machines forum) simply because it's powerful yet simple to run, not too resource heavy, and is good for SEO. Oh, and it's bundled in most cPanel's fantastico's.

Typically not, usually phpBB and SMF are the most common suspects.

yup thats true, i am not sure about this....just asking a question
first the 2.0.3 version was free...so if someone is using the free version...before they decided to make it paid...do they still have to pay?

not to use it technicly, it will just say it's a trial, but will never run out, aka the unlimited trial. But to update/upgrade you must pay no matter what version :(

I'd agree with nicedomain4sale.
But if you need something free go for IPB 1.3.1
