What is your favorite professional domain valuation service? I'm looking for two factors:
  • value for money
  • recognition by potential bidders (i.e. not Estibot)
Your choice of service will probably depend on the value of the domain. Paying $29 for a Sedo valuation is an insignificant expense if you have a $xx,xxx domain, but a waste of money if your domain is $xx. I'm looking realistically at high $xx or low $xxx domains.

GoDaddyGoDaddy
Quite honestly, no paid appraisal service is worth it. I recommend checking sales comps for similar domain name sales.

If you think that's what they are worth then it's likely that's what they are worth. Sell at your prices and don't let others tell you what something will sell for.

Right, but doesn't a certified appraisal sometimes raise the value of a domain, by improving buyer confidence - e.g. if you put the certificate in an ebay listing?

I use Estibot.com for a free appraisal. Honestly they are the best non-human service appraisal available. Their value is based on the keywords that make up the domain name. However Human-Based appraisals are a waste of money. For example if you use Sedo, Afternic, & GoDaddy they will all give you big different values to your domain. The three appraisals might be: 7,000-10,000, 300-1,000, 15,000-20,000. So what's the real use of that? This just proves that nobody really knows the true value of a domain name. So the only way to value it yourself is to look at recent/past sales. And the best way to search for past/recent sales is at namebio.com . Hope this helps.

How do all the sales which are conducted privately relate to "official" salesprices like can be seen at namebio.
Are private sales for relative the same quality domains likely higher or lower than the "openly" sold domains?

The difference can be huge. Many of the largest domain sales are never reported because the companies would prefer not to disclose this information.

Currently, I am waiting to report a $200,000 domain sale, but waiting on the right information.

However, sometimes "private" domain sales ARE reported, but as it stands, its entirely up to either party (assuming no NDA exists).

I think that people who truly give weight to a paid appraisal are gullible and maybe they deserve to get burned D-:

If you are talking about names that YOU feel are under the mid $$$ range
then I would suggest you consider using godaddy's low priced appraisals
($4.99) and get a name for $1.99. The appraisal is by a powerhouse in
the industry and if your buyer believes in appraisals then you will have
them on file at GD.

Otherwise you can use:

Estibot[]com
As an excellent tool to evaluate the names for your self.
EB gives you a good range of info to glean from.

NameBio[]com
NB gives you a good history of names you can compare to
your in likeness or similarities.

DNjournal[]com
DNJ has a great history of name sales and tons of other info
for domainers to use for comparisons.

NamePros[]com
You can ask for an appraisal and if the name is a viable
play then you will get appraised. A non-response by the
members as a whole is indicative of a bad/poor review.

Swiftappraisal[]com.
This is SEDO's free tool. You control the name variables
during your search and can see the value effect as you
change the variables a bit.

Good luck
