I've found (if you didn't already notice) that mambo is the CMS (content management system) for me. It's got several free lance and 3rd party development for integration into the core system and its easy for anyone who doesn't know PHP or web design to get a mambo site up for nothing at all except domain purchase and hosting. I'd strongly urge programming noobs and others willing to experiment to check out www.mamboserver.com and www.mambo-foundation.org for more information.

I suggest either making your own or using Drupal.

Drupal is the best CMS. I used to like Joomla but all the templates starting looking the same and I found it difficult to make my own for it.

I would have to second that, if you don't make your own, go with drupal.

Yeah, Mambo is now Joomla. Joomla is a little bit complex, especially to design your own template. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy however.

I actually liked Mambo as well.

Depends on what you want to do with your website.

I have used several CMS's
Textpattern
CMS Made Simple
SPIP
Xaraya
Mambo
Drupal

Right now I am just experimenting with Xaraya, and tend to lean towards Textpattern, as it is fairly flexible and easy to configure. Another favorite of mine is CMS Made Simple, because it is what it says it is.

I'm definitely not a fan of Mambo, or sites made with Mambo. They all are starting to look the same (and I guess that goes with Joomla as well - and don't get me wrong, I am not saying that they aren't quality coded and usable applications, they just don't fit to my taste).

I was looking at newspaper and magazine website publishing with SPIP, but I haven't taken the necessary time to get into it too deeply.

I have also started to work with Campsite, which I will be configuring with seo friendly URL's as a complete news portal.

Textpattern
Can be used for a news-ish style site or a blog. Its up to you and there are a lot of support resource sthat you can add modifications, plugins and more. Highly recommended

CMS Made Simple
I like CMS Made Simple because of its simplicity. But don't think of it as just that. You can add on modifications to it as well from the CMS Made Simple Repository.

I hoep that was informative - but remember, its purely opinion ;)

www.mamboserver.com ex. www.hardworking.com/portal/ demo for development
www.postnuke.org www.hardworking.com
www.phpnuke.org I'm sure you can see more demo.
www.pligg.com this is my new craze CMS to try on. Very nice design. I like the concept of posting articles.

Is CMSMS the easiest for a newbie to use? I've tried PHPnuke and phplite and gotten basically random pages with some of the 'modules' and content I've tried to plugin actually show up!
Is there a php-type software that is basically "fill-in-the-blank"? I'm not trying to sound ignorant, I am ignorant, so don't even ask!
:)

If you want easiest then you should look for 'Lite' CMS.... goto OpensourceCMS.com...

Select the CMS that suits your needs. meaning look for the features you want, and then search which CMS provides them

I use Xoops for one site and Drupal for others

anyone know if drupal, joomla or CMS made simple have a module to create an image gallery that can be used for different registered users to upload their photos?
I tried looking for one, but cant find one that allows registered users to upload into a ready made image gallery.

A lot of people don't realize that with some php skills, Wordpress can be used as a full site CMS.

Yeah, its easy to make the pages and add small tags (non-php) with basic html templates.

PHPNuke or Postnuke for fill-in the blank experience, this include html pages. You don't need to install additional modules.
