Dont know of a guide, but I can tell you about the procedure, which is actually quite simple:

1. Get hold of expired lists. There are sites that offer daily expired domains lists... some are free, some are paid. The paid ones (something like $5/mo. or $60/yr. +/- some $$) usually offer nice features such as keyword search, pr check, backlink check, checking if the domain is (recently was) listed on dmoz, and things like that.

2. Once you buy yourself a subscription for such services, you can then do some keyword based searches on them. You can write your own scripts which can weed out junk pretty fast, so that your lists become somewhat manageable.

3. Once you've short listed the ones you like, check out when they're expiring/deleting/have expired....
Backorder the ones that you like, and register the ones that are already available.

This is the procedure.

There is a section on catching expired domain names at DNJournal's new sister site, NameNewbie.com - The Beginner's Guide to Making Money With Domain Names. The link to the expired domains section is here: http://www.namenewbie.com/Drop_Catching.html
