Be aware of scamming web host: Why do so many hosting companies sell unlimited/unmetered bandwidth on shared hosting plans? How are they able to offer such plans and what would happen if every one of their customers decided to use 20GB bandwidth for their $5/mo unlimited/unmetered bandwidth plan?

Answer: They oversell/false advertise their bandwidth then hope you never use it, most of them will find a reason to cancel your account or make you pay extra money if you decided to use more bandwidth than what they can "REALLY" offer even though they advertised unlimited/unmetered. Usually these web host buy a plan like $5/mo for 20GB bandwidth with multiple domain hosting support and they resell this 1 account to alot of people and let all their customers share that 20GB bandwidth then sit and hope their customers don't use it up, that's how most of them works, the reason why they advertise unlimited/metered bandwidth on their plans because they are too scared to let people know their "REAL" bandwidth allowance. These scammer web hosts have the following things in common, they only accept payments from paypal, they have email and/or chat support but no telephone support, some of them will have an invalid or answering machine only telephone number.

Don't agree. Most hosts that offer telephone support have long hold times, I think it's much better to have a host that puts all his effort into top notch email and live chat support.

In the 7 or 8 years that I've been using hosts, I don't think I've ever called one.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Just cause they dont have a telephone support doesnt mean they arnt professional. And just cause they have unmetered stuff doesnt mean its a scam. It just means that they might have good servers that can hold customers stuff....Thats just my opinion...

well, if they have "unmetered stuff", then it can't be cheap
if they offer "unmetered stuff" for $2 or $5 then it is scamming

Maybe. But what if they just want to make more money that way? Maybe if they sell it cheaper then more will buy so they make more profit....

In researching where to host, I saw a lot of sites that had unmetered bandwidth, but if you read their AUP, it usually says what you can't do. That includes file transfers, large picture galleries, busy forums, basically anything that eats up lots of bandwidth. They sometimes have a clause that unlimited for these type sites means 20-30 Gig. Or they don't let them at all. It depends on the site.

Good job...Ya you must read the AUP or TOS or whatever and they will tell you what and what you cannot do. So it wont take a lot of bandwidth or space....

but you should never buy unmetered bandwidth, because 1MB can also be unmetered bandwidth and you can't even complain

I know a company that offers both unmetered bandwidth and space, they say they keep upgrading the servers so you will never run out of bandwidth or space, but that is probaly a lie!

what a load of tripe!

im currently in the middle of relaunching my mates host with him since i have become a business partner

we do not offer telephone support but we have 40+ customers who are all happy and we are far from a scam

we have been in business 1.5 years and are far from ripping people off

its just not affoardable for us to offer telephone support.

and i dont think telephone support with hosts is that much great ive only called a host once and that was to verify my account details with them when i ordered my boxes.

I've called a host in the past as they changed their TOS after I signed up and then wanted to kick me off and not give me a refund as I was in violation now that the AUP and the TOS had changed. but other than that, if a host is reputable across the internet community or you hear good praise of them, go ahead and use them even with only email and live chat tech support.

I think you're better off as well :imho: ~ I'll keep at least one Decent sized plan or two .... But it works better for me to spread out some mini sites ~

I've been hosting for over three years and have never offered phone support and never will openly on my sites. You would be surprised at how many people (even experienced users) that think a host is a all around tech support as in fixing script problems, installing scripts, etc and all of this for the 15 cents a day they want to pay.

I also prefer paypal as a payment gateway for several reasons. One of those would be I don't have to worry about storing my customers personal information and be concerned about the possibility of that information being hacked. Another is practically everything I do online involves Paypal as a payment method. And yet another would be all my accounting is done for me.

While I do agree with the overselling issue and this is why I really don't do too much selling anymore other than my local clients which have been referred by my other clients or by other means of offline advertising. It's not worth my time to support a "Needy" client 24/7 for $5 a month.
