Hey Everyne,

I originally posted this in the Newbie section but it was suggested I post here.

My original post:

I found this website and was hoping this would be the place to get some help with my domain. I own a number of domains but I have a question about one in particular. It's a great domain name that I have owned since 1994. I am the original owner. I used it for my business and now that I am no longer doing that particular business, I am looking for other options for my domian. This is what I am thinking:

1 - Sell it outright if I can get a lot of money for it (6 figures)
2 - Rent it
3 - use it to generate an income with ad sales??

I would appreciate some advice on this. If I try to sell it, do I go the auction route? Should I just try to contact companies directly? I've been contacted a number of times but I've always turned down the offers. I've tried the domain parking route as well with a and wasn't very happy with the results.
Please help out if you can. It seems like everyone on this forum is very knowledgeable.

Thanks!

Stacey

A word of warning:

A lot of the auction houses (Moniker, Sedo, etc.) may suggest low reserves and to let the "market decide". Bad advice. Moniker for example routinely encourages people to set "no reserve" and let the market decide. nonsense.

Pick a reasonable reserve, not a low reserve. If it is a bad or poorly attended auction (lot of those at Moniker) you end up selling cheap. Take your time and don't rush with this valuable domain. At this point it is just a guess whether the "reseller" pricing common in these auctions can support a xxx,xxx reserve. It would be preferable to put some work into it and find an end user. Whatever you do, don't rush. Since you have held it since 1994, then don't blow it in the last few months of ownership.

Before auctioning it off on Sedo, I would contact the top 10 basket sellers and see if you can find an end-user without paying a $XX,XXX commission.

Basket.com could also be an Ebay competitor that we all desperately need. Like shopping basket/cart :gn:

What is your feeling if I put a "For Sale" sign up on my site? Right now it is only set up as a blog.

I started reading up on Sedo and will also contact potential buyers directly. I am not comfortable with accepting Paypal for payment - that is why I wouldn't consider doing ebay. What is the safest way to accept payment? Also, I won't transfer the domain until I receive payment but on the buyer's end, I could see how they would feel apprehensive to pay a large amount of money and trust that I would transfer it. Is there something in between that protects both the seller and the buyer?

Thanks

The safest way to recieve payment for it is via Escrow.com, will cost some commission tho :alien:

I agree. You should use an escrow service. This means that the money is held by a 3rd party until the transaction is complete. You do pay commission but its worth it.

Seriously, it is Great domain.

Escrow.com is NOT the safest for domain deal.

Use Moniker escrow.
Use EscrowDNS.com

My question is, why sell it? Sure you could get a large sum of money up front... or you could develop it into a successfull business venture grossing multi millions yearly. Best advice I have is don't rush into anything. Take your time. If you dont want to start a whole business thing, consider making a site and throwing up some well placed ads (consult a psychologist for best effect) and see how that does a few months. You could easily make several thousand a month from ads alone (with a nice site) both PPC and through affiliate marketing. I wish you the best in your venture, if you have any questiona about anything contact me any time.

Thanks to everyone for all of your feedback.

I have considered the development option but I am kind of at a loss for ideas. When I had my corporate gift basket biz it was a no brainer and it worked out really well. Now that I stopped doing that (about 8 months now), I'm just not really sure what to do with it. As I mentioned, I tried the parking thing for a few months but that was only generaing about $100 per month or so. Now it's just set up as a blog and I write about different basket related things. I haven't been great about posting regularly though. I have the google ads set up but that's as far as I know when it comes to advertising. Any suggestion on development ideas or advertising would be greatly appreciated. If I can generate a good monthly income from it I would definitely consider that route. I am still considering the sales option though. Still doing some research.

Thanks.

If you don't have time to develop an affiliate scheme should do well for the domain.
