Basics of Selling a Domain

Hello, I'm new to this site and to "domaining" as a whole. I have a few very basic questions about the process of selling a domain name.

1. How do you transfer the ownership of a domain name to a buyer. From what I can tell alot of people "push" the registration between two accounts at the same registrar, but what if the buyer doesn't want to do this.
(I'm using godaddy.com for my domains)

2. What usually comes first - payment or transfer of the name? Do you always use paypal?

1.) pushing is used most often because it is free at most registrars, buyer creates a free account at the registrar you have the domain at and you can push it over to their account, if the buyer doesn't wish to keep the name at the registrar where you have the domain located you would need to unlock the domain and have them request a domain transfer from their end at the registar they would like it at which usually costs them the price of a 1 year renewal but will extend the expiration 1 year as well, there are restrictions on transfering a domain name out to a different registrar, ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days, so a brand new domain at godaddy will not be able to be transfered away but can only be pushed to a different account at godaddy until that 60 day time period passes.

in godaddy...

put a check in box next to the domain name

then click set locking above

then change it to unlocked and hit save changes


just make sure funds clear before you unlock and let buyer transfer your domains away
