Brick and mortar broadcasting is buying up bandwidth until they can migrate to the digital market. We, the consumer, are held hostage until a viable monetary model will support the control and profits current industry players desire.

Same with the Fuel industry, cigarettes etc. The government can't afford to let new technology "move in" due to the fact it would cause so many lay offs and lower the profits/taxes structure already underfunding our government spending.

ATT is in the same boat in that they do not want to lower fees. They can't blame the INTERNET but if the bandwidth is gone then "they" can use that as an excuse to "raise" rates. The conundrum being the public is not ready to make the transformation to all digital so entities like ATT and the broadcasters drag their feet to maximize the profits in the archaic model before taking over the digital market.

I suspect a bit more lobbying and bribing our Senators and Congress peeps are still in order as well. So the message is be patient. The gov. and big bizz is not ready to give you/me/us anything cheap. Even if they can. And Damn, or regulate, any one that tries to circumvent the "game".

LOL ..... I'm on my rant pills again.

Conspiracies.... Drama.... it's all go..!!!
AT&T can't support the growing bandwidth growth demands with the current 3G network they have. It will (and is) costing BILLIONS of investment (11B 2010) of which YouTube and Google pay.. and Hulu pays and etc.....

As an AT&T "broadband" customer I can say their service sucks. Here in L.A. AT&T broadband speed is only 1/3 of the city average, and they began to throttle that back about a month ago as vids that used to stream now routinely buffer.

The problem is there is no actual competition. Even though Verizon is about the same distance from me as AT&T (I can see both company buildings from my home), Verizon -which has faster speeds at lower prices, will not service my block.

3 companies control 80% of the broadband market, in the U.S., and they work together on turf so they don't have to directly compete with one another for customers.

However, I think its time to take them on. They are highly vulnerable in several areas and choking the pipe line to squeeze customers also puts the squeeze on the major online companies... which are global.

does not effect us at all, they are doing this due to live data streams and api's that generate live streams through a simple website that would consume the 3g network, like justin.tv, livestream, and ustream

perhaps they are doing this to give more available data to allow live streaming video phone calls for the iphone4 over 3g which they only offer through wifi atm..
