In contrast to all the recent good news we now have some bad news for all those interested in the world of internet TV

One of the main local internet TV channels in the UK KentTV.com has been scrapped after Kent County Council decided NOT to maintain its spend of $1 million a year on producing output.

BBC News - Kent's council-run internet TV channel to close

In a separate development, ChannelM.co.uk, the duel satellite and internet TV channel for the UK city of Manchester has a bIG axe hanging over it after its parent company, the Manchester Evening News newspaper was sold to Trinity Mirror Newspapers.

Not a good day for internet TV.

Jimbo,
that is one awesome looking website/tv channel.
With it being Bob Geldof's baby, I guess you wouldn't expect any less.

I find this qoute interesting...
"We intend to continue to develop digital media to connect with the people of Kent."
I wonder how they propose that, and will they keep any of their shows???

That really sucks for them and all of their fans.

I think I will blame it on it being a "tv.com" and not a ".TV"

Pretty tough, I guess?

Now we have to see if the sun rises in the east and sets in the west...

Monty Python...

Better yet, let's ask Don Quixote...I think I saw his banner heading toward the west.

I guess you have to wonder about a council running a site like that. Unless it is really to attract tourists then I would think the question is "why?". If it is going to work long term then I think it would probably need to be run privately.

I think the original idea of the council was that they 'sparked' the idea with lots of professionally made films and the public would follow with their own short films.

Good idea, but for the same money they spent in total they might have been better offering 10,000 prizes of $500 for the best films about Kent. That way they would have involved every corner of Kent Society.

The local council have probably just realised that offering money to Bob Geldof to run the channel might not have been the greatest idea if they wanted a return. He is, of course, best known on a global scale for collecting money for charity work!

Bad dent for council-run channels, but eventually someone will get it right!!!!

Personally I think it is the wrong business for them, leave it to the media people.

Sadly, they thought that Bob Geldof and his Ten Alps Company were the exact 'media' people to get it up and running.

Production values were high and some of the best talents in the film industry were scripting and filming the stories and films.

That policy was as effective as putting your latest blockbuster $200 million movie straight on DailyMotion. It was just too over the top.

The opposition councillors had a field day at pointing out the extravagant film costs paid for by public money.

Some of the other UK councils are also preparing their own TV channels, but wit VERY different strategies. Most involve encouraging 'local' people to make their own films with 'small' financial incentives.
