In 2018, the domain Backpage.com was among several seized after sex trafficking charges were made. The FBI took control of its DNS, pointing Backpage.com to a lander with a prominent message. For a domain registered in 1999, this was the end of the road.

That's interesting, so verisign was making money even on FBI and seized domains... In .pl zone, domains are blocked at registry level, the public doesn't have to pay for them, but to each their own I guess.

the money Verisign made off this can't buy you a dozen eggs right now, but I get your point.

I'm sure there are thousands of domains like that. Sure, you can say, "oh, it's just 50 or 100 thousand dollars a year, no big deal", but needless costs like those tend to stack into millions and billions. I'm a bit of a scrooge as it is, but seeing public money spent carelessly triggers me even more.

If you drop a $100k+ asset with a holding cost of $10/year just because your budget was cut, then you are INSANE!

Edited: it's at $209k now.

It ended at $259,500.
Is that the highest price expired domain auction ever?

Domain Shane said:
The winner of Backpage. com auction for $200K plus is a well known domain investor who had the ability to monetize it and warrant the high price. The other top 3 bidders also were people who participate in that space.

He purchased the site that it links to at auction as well (NSFW). In short, there is big money selling domains but there is a lot more money in the businesses behind the domains. If that type of person comes to the auction, you will never beat them as they have an ability to yield returns at an auction price well above the price most are willing to go
