I noticed that you can backorder domain names and I am wondering if anyone has done this and have been successfull in getting that name?

Why and when should people backorder?

There are many successful backorders. There are probably a thousand times more unsuccessful backorders.

Why? Because you want to own the domain.
When? Just prior to expiry.

You should backorder when:
1. You absolutely need to have this name, or
2. You believe there is someone else other than you who are also interested to own this name.

Why?
1. Because these dropcatcher service will snap up the names in micro seconds once they become available to register. It is almost impossible to beat their speed if you try to hand-register yourself.
2. Because these backorder service have special agreements with registrars. When a name expires, these dropcatchers will be given priority to register the names before they become publicly available to register.

I have been successful backordering names with Snapnames and Namejet. I haven't used Pool.

If the domain you're interested in is registered with GoDaddy, then don't use their backorder service which they charge about $18. It's a complete waste of money. Instead, buy a TDNam membership subscription. This is where all the Godaddy names goto auction when they expire. You can buy the name from TDNam.
