About a month ago, I started a backorder for a domain I wanted to capture. The domain was set to expire on about November 2nd.

I placed a backorder with Godaddy. A few days before the domain was going to expire, I recieved a few e-mails saying they were in the process of capturing the domain.

On November 2nd, I recieved another e-mail from GoDaddy saying the capture had failed.

We're sorry, but the following domain name(s) that you backordered was not captured successfully:

Ahh well, it wasn't that big of a deal anyway, I'd just find a new domain that I wanted to backorder later.

Then yesterday, I got an e-mail from DomainsByProxy (I backordered the domain with private registration). It gave me information on how to access my account.

???

I hadn't heard anything from GoDaddy so I logged into my account and sure enough, there was the domain. I unlocked it, changed the nameservers to mine, and then relocked it.

I did a whois on the domain and it says it was registered on November 10th, yesteryday.

Anyone have any idea how this happened?

After it was captured by someone else, I did a whois on it. The registrar findyouadomain.com was who had captured it. It was then transfered to capdom.com on the 6th.

And now, on the 10th, I apparently own it.

I'm currently in the process of designing the site so I'd rather not give out the link.

The owner of the domain, probally reregistered the domain, and why is why you should never waste your money on backordiering

I don't know what you mean?

First off, the owner couldn't re-register it because it was PENDINGDELETE and expired. The domain was owned by GoDaddy while it was REDEMPTIONPERIOD / PENDINGDELETE. Then, after it expired, it was registered by findyouadomain.com, then transfered to capdom.com. If the owner had re-registered it, then wouldn't the registrar have stayed with GoDaddy?

And why would the owner re-register it and then let it go after a week?

And I just now recieved an e-mail from GoDaddy saying my capture has been successful.

This is really strange, has anyone else had this happen? One day you're told your domain capture was unsuccessful, it's registered by someone else, and then a week later, you have access to the domain and you're now told your capture is successful?

It's probably the system problem. Have you mailed them with this question? I think if you would, they probably would say that this is system problem.

Mytheory on this is that it was captured by someone else who couldn't/din't then stump up the cash. So it defaulted to second in the chain ie: You :)

Result :)

It's the usual 'grab the domain for free, test for traffic, then dump it if it doesn't bring in any, monkey business that a lot of ICANN accredited registrars are doing right now.

Since it involves no money for them to do this to literally thousands of names at a go, its just another smart way of justifying the accreditation fees and reason for being.
