This just may be the best article I have seen on mobi in terms of who is writing it/where it is published. Just great. Out today through Fortune and up on CNNmoney.com.
Among my favorite quotes (and there are many)
"If the first wave of online business was all about getting a dot-com, the next may be about adding a dot-mobi."

Wow cac, you are right on target...I feel the same way, this is the best I've seen.

I love this:

""When one client called us, the new [dot-mobi] site was the determining factor in the sale," says CEO Derek Jackson. "He could access it as he was speaking to us." The $3,500 sale yielded about $1,750 in profits - an immediate 875% ROI from his $200 dot-mobi investment."

You mean like when he says "Even Star Trek fans venture outdoors"? I agree it does sound as if the jounalist somehow knows that for a fact. LOL

On a serious note, I agree there are some embarrassing errors - most likely stemming from less than acceptable note keeping/interpretation standards (now which domain blogger does that remind of?).

A few stem from the journalist apparent omission of the year after the launch month in his notes (it was May 2006, not just May).

None seem to be central to the argument/main point of the article though.
:imho:

PV: I tried, same problem. ANyone still able to rep cac14850?

The first wave was all about getting a dot-com, the next may be about adding a .mobi

Indeed not very accurate.

BUT THIS IS AWESOME!!!!

A very positive article, on a webpage with a HUGH audience. This will be read by the people who could (or will) make .mobi big... :) Some quotes are really great...

If the first wave of online business was all about getting a dot-com, the next may be about adding a dot-mobi.

I will write something to post on dotMobiz.com

Cheers,

Stijn

posted on dotMobiz, including my opinion about .mobi....

http://dotmobiz.com/mobi-domain-news/blog-bid-26

dotMobi is grewingโ€ฆ The one year old baby with no parents is getting more and more attention. In her first year a lot of technical people knew about her and were quarrelling about whether it would be worth raising her. But after the โ€˜one year birthdayโ€™ of the .mobi baby, the salesmen and marketers are adopting her. They will raise her, and spread the word about herโ€ฆ

I agree, but everyone is entitled to be badly wrong sometimes :)

I haven't given up on the people you mentioned though.

So for those who don't like clicking on links that are likely to give them cognitive dissonance;), here are some key excerpts from the article with my emphases - sorry I couldn't resist:

So when Dewey heard about a new kind of website tailored to conduct e-commerce over cellphones, he jumped at the chance to make himself accessible to clients during virtually all their waking hours. "If someone sees an advertisement, he may not remember it by the time he gets back to his computer," he says. "But his phone is always on hand for an impulse buy."

If the first wave of online business was all about getting a dot-com, the next may be about adding a dot-mobi.

Sign up for a dot-mobi address and you'll be required to stick to a list of best practicesโ€ฆ
โ€ฆ
"When a site is built that way," says mTLD marketing director Vance Hedderel, "it's guaranteed to work well on every cellphone in the world."
โ€ฆ
Nearly all new cellphones are set up to browse the web, but what users often see is a site designed for viewing on a PC that is being squeezed onto a matchbook-sized screen.
โ€ฆ
โ€ฆjust 13% of Americans with Internet-capable cellphones go online - and a paltry 1% have bought a product via mobile browsers, compared with 28% in Japan.
โ€ฆ
Is dot-mobi the answer? Plenty of businesses seem to think so.
โ€ฆ
mTLD offers a free tool that evaluates, on a scale of one to five, how close your website is to becoming a dot-mobi. A free site builder will help you take it all the way.
โ€ฆ
MyDomain CEO Clint Page says the key is making dot-mobi sites as bare bones as possible. "On the mobile web, you have about 20 seconds of the user's attention," he says. "Sites don't have to be pretty - they just need to be efficient."
โ€ฆ
โ€ฆeven if Apple hits its ambitious sales targets, it will own just 1% of the cellphone market by mid-2008.

It doesn't take much more than a single sale to ring up returns. Derek Group, a photography studio based in Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y., received a dozen inquiries stemming from derek.mobi during the two months after MyDomain created the site for it. "When one client called us, the new [dot-mobi] site was the determining factor in the sale," says CEO Derek Jackson. "He could access it as he was speaking to us." The $3,500 sale yielded about $1,750 in profits - an immediate 875% ROI from his $200 dot-mobi investment.

It is quite possible that the unseen hand of Mtld is behind this article - and it is hard to imagine a better location (one of the top four business magazines, i would say, along with Forbes, Businessweek and Barrons) or a more positive approach (has that guy been reading some of our posts from last year?)

Mtld was surprised by the Google Android announcement, but they managed to get into the SF Chronicle article about it anyway, that is good - but Fortune - that is big time baby.
