RE: Autonomous & Driverless car domains

Seems like there's a lot of news lately, as recently as the last few days, of advances in driverless & autonomous cars. There are multiple auto makers getting ready to launch some form of these cars, and of course, Google is working on their project car.

I have a handful of domains related to this news & technology, and I am wondering if anybody else has any? Also, any spike in traffic to your domains, or news of sales???

Interesting Article
  • More than 30 thousand people die from traffic accidents each year in the US alone, and more than two million are injured.
  • If we wait even longer to put self-driving vehicles on the road, more people are going to die. Why arenโ€™t we doing more to get them on the road faster?

Cruise Automation Is Testing an App For Hailing Self-Driving Cars

Cruise Automation, a division of General Motors that makes autonomous car technology, has developed a mobile app to request rides in self-driving Chevrolet Bolt EVs.

The app is being used by Cruise employees on a test basis to request a ride in an autonomous Bolt EV from their home to the company's office in San Francisco. The test program was started a few months ago, according to a GM spokesman.

Tesla and fully autonomous cars will change your life

In the past decade new technology has brought about many big changes. The pace of that change has been exponential. But youโ€™d better buckle up because weโ€™re on the verge of another major one: autonomous cars. And while you may be tired of new technology being called โ€œdisruptiveโ€, it really is the best way to describe the kind of change autonomous cars are about to bring about.

WHAT COULD OUR DAILY LIVES BE LIKE IN THE YEARS AHEAD FOR OWNERS OF FULL SELF-DRIVING TESLAS?

Today, you might use your Model S or Model X to get to work, where it sits in a parking lot until itโ€™s time to come home. But with full self-driving capabilities, a Tesla could pick you up, drop you off, and even carpool the kids, all without human guidance. Autonomous vehicles can easily shuttle passengers between gaps in transit routes โ€” and even take them door-to-door. With this level of autonomy, passengers might not need to own a car at all โ€” theyโ€™ll just order a car when they need one, and it will drive itself over to help out.

But the possibilities for autonomous vehicles donโ€™t stop there. Right now Tesla is developing software that will allow your car to be useful even when youโ€™re not using it. In the future, you might be able to send your autonomous vehicle out independently to act as an autonomous taxi or delivery vehicle and earn you money.

Ultimately this could all change the way we own and use cars. For many, cars might stop being prized (and expensive) possessions. And car โ€œownershipโ€ may become more like a service or utility, like electricity and home internet.

Our Driverless Future

This September, Uber, the app-summoned taxi service, launched a fleet of driverless Volvos and Fords in the city of Pittsburgh. While Google has had its own autonomous vehicles on the roads of Mountain View, California, Austin, Texas, Kirkland, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona, for a few years, gathering data and refining its technology, Uberโ€™s Pittsburgh venture marks the first time such cars will be available to be hailed by the American public. (The worldโ€™s first autonomous taxi service began offering rides in Singapore at the end of August, edging out Uber by a few weeks.)

Ford to invest $1 billion in autonomous vehicle tech firm Argo AI
r

Ford Motor Co plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years in tech startup Argo AI to help the Detroit automaker reach its goal of producing a self-driving vehicle for commercial ride sharing fleets by 2021, the companies announced on Friday.

The investment in Pittsburg-based Argo AI, founded by former executives on self-driving teams at Google and Uber, will make Ford the company's largest shareholder.

Ford Chief Executive Officer Mark Fields said the investment is in line with previous announcements on planned capital expenditures.

Argo AI, which focuses on artificial intelligence and robotics, will help build what Ford calls its "virtual driver system" at the heart of the fully autonomous car Ford said last year it would develop by 2021.

Autonomous truck technology seen evolving rapidly

The technology that will lead to autonomous trucks tomorrow is being tested and deployed on highways today, component by component. That will speed the evolution of autonomous vehicle technology and lead to the introduction of autonomous trucks more quickly than many people think, Scott Perry, chief technology & procurement officer for Ryder System, believes.

โ€œThereโ€™s an evolution occurring from a technology standpoint thatโ€™s very real, and the pieces are coming together to create the whole,โ€ Perry said. He referred to not just the lane-change warning systems, forward-looking radar and cameras and automated braking systems already being sold on spec by truck manufacturers and suppliers, but the automated transmission.

โ€œWeโ€™re seeing a major shift away from manual technologies to more automated technologies and interconnected systems,โ€ Perry said Friday. โ€œThe most apparent is the automated transmission. Weโ€™ve seen a shift toward automated transmissions in the heavy-duty space.โ€

Truck makers such as Kenworth offer automated manual transmissions as an option. The adoption and integration of various safety-related systems over the next few years will create the foundation for autonomous trucks and cars, Perry said.

Perry is one of a growing number of thinkers in the transportation industry who expect autonomous vehicle technology, in concert with other technologies, especially vehicle-to-vehicle communications, will reshape the business of shipping sooner rather than later. That will have enormous implications for supply chains, shipping costs and distribution and fulfillment.

โ€œI used to believe weโ€™d see this stuff in 15 to 20 years, that it would get out slowly,โ€ Dan Murray, vice president of the American Transportation Research Institute, said at the Transportation Research Boardโ€™s annual conference in Washington, D.C., last month. Then he attended Ottoโ€™s test of an autonomous truck last October in Colorado as an independent observer.

In what may be the Kitty Hawk moment for autonomous trucks, the Uber subsidiary ran a tractor-trailer equipped with its technology 120 miles on โ€œauto-pilot,โ€ hauling Budweiser beer. โ€œI drank the Kool-Aid,โ€ Murray said. โ€œIs the technology ready? Mostly, yes. Itโ€™s mostly financial, institutional challenges we face. But Iโ€™m moving my 15-20 year forecast up to maybe five.โ€

As the technology behind autonomous vehicles rapidly evolves, โ€œall the assumptions we make around the way we do business today have to be looked at through a different lens,โ€ Perry said. โ€œI think theassumptions are all going to be challenged.โ€ For example, if all vehicles on a highway are wirelessly, electronically connected, are speed limits still necessary?

That possibility of an interconnected network of cars and trucks may be years away, but autonomous, if not driverless, trucks are likely to be here first. The reason: Safety. โ€œOn-highway injuries, accidents and fatalities are squarely in the sites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other agencies clearing the wayโ€ for autonomous vehicles, Perry said.

In December, NHTSA proposed requiring light-duty vehicles be equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle or V2V communications technology by 2023. The Department of Transportation released its Federal Automated Vehicles Policy and guidelines for developers in September. In January 2016, the DOT announced a 10-year, $4 billion plan to accelerate vehicle automation.

โ€œWe have an unprecedented opportunity for a safety impact,โ€ Sandra Larson, director of the systems operations bureau at the Iowa Department of Transportation, said at the TRB meeting. โ€œNHTSA has estimated 94 percent of crashes are due in some measure to human error and choice. Eighty percent of crashes could be mitigated or eliminatedโ€ with autonomous vehicles.

Thereโ€™s a difference, however, between eliminating human error and removing humans from truck cabs. Autonomous does not necessarily mean โ€œdriverless,โ€ Perry said. โ€œIโ€™m not saying this technology is going to displace the truck driver, but it changes the discussion dramatically around hours of service and what role the driver plays in operating the vehicle.โ€

In transportation economics, โ€œthe limiting factor today is the driver,โ€ he said. โ€œAnything that can be done to drive efficiency and extend the hours the driver can be in the vehicle helps to address that.โ€ Trucks with a high level of autonomy, such as Uberโ€™s Otto offers, would change the nature of the driverโ€™s job, as well, which Perry thinks would not be a bad thing.

โ€œThis is about making the work environment more productive and retaining the drivers we have,โ€ he said. โ€œThere already are a lot of driverless trucks out there. Theyโ€™re parked because carriers canโ€™t find drivers. Technology like this could help us keep older drivers longer, and help us recruit new drivers because trucks are more user-friendly and the learning curve isnโ€™t so steep.โ€
