RE: Autonomous & Driverless car domains

Seems like there's a lot of news lately, as recently as the last few days, of advances in driverless & autonomous cars. There are multiple auto makers getting ready to launch some form of these cars, and of course, Google is working on their project car.

I have a handful of domains related to this news & technology, and I am wondering if anybody else has any? Also, any spike in traffic to your domains, or news of sales???

Maybe there needs to be a "smart transportation" group in the niche domain name discussion of which ride sharing and driverless cars would be subcategories within the content of the group! Awesome names Elad...all winners in my view.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Autopilot 8.1 Is "About Three Weeks" Away

Elon Musk finally answered the question on so many Tesla owner’s lips: when will the semi-autonomous Autopilot 8.1 software update be released? It turns out they won’t have long to wait: the Tesla CEO said it’s all coming in about three weeks, when the new OS will start rolling our incrementally in monthly releases.

The new software update coincides with the release of an Enhanced Autopilot feature which will allow vehicles to achieve the top-rated Level 5 autonomy — a rating that deems it safer than vehicles operated by human drivers. By dramatically increasing the on board computer’s processing power — and thanks to 8 cameras and a slew of ultrasonic sensors — the update will allow the vehicle to drive completely on its own.

With the rollout of Version 8.1, the Autosteer capabilities will even provide the ability for any equipped vehicle to exit off freeways, on its own. A major step towards a fully autonomous vehicle. Musk predicts we could see an Autopiloted Tesla travel cross-country by the end of 2017.

Self-driving Cars Excite Industry, But They're Not Yet Ready For Prime Time

There has been much fevered talk about the imminence of self driving cars, leaving the impression with the public that it won’t be very long before the automobiles we buy don’t even have steering wheels or pedals.

This has been fuelled by the car manufacturers themselves as they swap overblown rhetoric about the progress being made thanks to their engineer’s ingenuity and the massive sums committed to these projects.

Britain’s BMI Research hosted a seminar recently where it tried to get the hype and bluster and provide some insight into the prospects of computerised/robot/autonomous vehicles. Perhaps job one should be to decide which of these terms makes the most sense.

But the most important “fact” to emerge from the meeting was that fully-autonomous cars won’t be available for up to 15 to 20 years , according to BMI Research analyst Anna-Marie Baisden.

Some questions to emerge included the fate of pricey sports cars like Ferrari in a driverless world.

If the computerized technology is so close to being able to drive a car on city roads or highways, handle errant pedestrians, know that an incoming object is a bird not a car, and handle a whole range of unpredictable situations, why aren’t train services already computerised and driver-less? After all, the task for train drivers excludes steering, turning or avoiding strange objects given that the path has already been cleared.

Manufacturers have made clear performance vehicles will be last in line for automation.

“We can expect autonomy to be mostly focussed on the mainstream car segment – but also commercial vehicles, as we have seen progress with delivery vehicles making largely autonomous trips,” Baisden said in a report.

Baidu Begins Public Self-Driving Vehicle Testing In Wuzhen, China

The Chinese tech giant Baidu has begun public testing of its self-driving vehicle technology along a 2 mile (3.16 kilometer) stretch of road in Wuzhen, China. The city is a popular tourist destination, and thus an interesting choice for a test location.

As of Tuesday, the self-driving cars had completed trips for more than 200 people. The vehicles in question — outfitted with cameras, Velodyne LiDAR, millimeter wave radar, and a computer located in the trunk to process and interpret all of the input data — are, as in pilot programs elsewhere, accompanied in the passenger seat by a company employee, in case there are problems.

The data processing equipment was apparently developed by Baidu in house — not surprising when you remember that the company made its name as the Chinese equivalent of Google. The vehicles themselves are retrofitted offerings provided by BYD, BAIC, and Chery.

Notably, the route that is currently host to the self-driving cars has already been, according to the company, “mapped with centimetre accuracy.” So, the testing is not truly in the “wilderness” so to speak, as of yet.

Tech Crunch provides more: “The cars switch lanes, negotiate intersections, pass slower cars and even make U-turns, achieving a max top speed of 60 km per hour (37 mph) in accordance with the local speed limit. … A display within the car shows passengers info, including traffic conditions and objects along the path.”

As it stands, Baidu is reportedly aiming for first production of commercial self-driving vehicles to begin in 2018, with a broader rollout targeted for 2021, presumably after most kinks have been worked out.

Uber's self-driving car partner skirted state rules to get noticed
q:100

Otto wasn't allowed to put a completely driverless truck on the road, but did it anyway.

Remember how Otto demonstrated a self-driving big rig truck without anyone in the cabin, making a great case for its eventual acquisition by Uber? It turns out that the company knowingly broke the rules, according to Backchannel... but also didn't have to face consequences for its actions. Nevada (where Otto shot its promo video) requires both a special license and people in the cockpit for any autonomous testing, but Otto decided that the month of licensing, modification and testing would take too long -- it went ahead anyway. Officials were outraged, and there was even talk of the state's Department of Motor Vehicles backing away from self-driving tech and placing it in the hands of a department focused on business development.

However, there wasn't much Nevada regulators could do in response. You see, the current rules (which were partly shaped by Otto's own Anthony Levandowski) don't actually punish violations. Amendments to the regulations could introduce penalties in 2017, but that's too late to do anything against Otto.

BMW strongly increases venture capital fund volume - Handelsblatt

BMW (BMWG.DE) is increasing the size of its venture capital fund, BMW i Ventures, to 500 million euros (425 million pounds) from 100 million, German business daily Handelsblatt said on Sunday, citing an interview with one of the carmaker's board members.

The fund, founded in 2011, will also move its location to Silicon Valley from New York, the paper said.

"We want to expand our focus and are moving to the Bay Area around San Francisco," the paper quoted Peter Schwarzenbauer as saying. "Half of all start-ups there are active in the field of mobility," he added.

So far the fund's focus has been on themes including electric mobility and mobility services, Schwarzenbauer said, but the focus would be expanded to include autonomous driving, digitalisation, cloud services and artificial intelligence.

That way BMW hopes to be able to react faster to trends in the technology industry, he said.

INTEL RACES TO PUT AUTONOMOUS CARS ON STREETS

Intel has established a new Automated Driving Group dedicated to making technologies for autonomous cars

As the PC market levels out, Intel believes it has a big future in autonomous cars. It's the new hot market the company is chasing, much like it did with mobile devices in recent years.

Autonomous cars are so significant to Intel that the company on Tuesday said it is establishing the Automated Driving Group, which will focus on developing hardware and software technology for self-driving vehicles.

Intel has already acquired a handful of companies developing autonomous vehicle technology. Intel has also partnered with BMW and Mobileye to put an autonomous car on the road in 2021. Earlier this month, Intel said it would invest US$250 million over the next two years to develop autonomous cars.

This is not innovation it's copycat from the Daniel Craig 007 casino Royale movie where a secret compartment in his aston Martin vanquish popped open via a call from mobile phone. Where he pulled out a Walter PPK with silencer, grenade Omega watch and Magnum's.:xf.wink:
