I don't think it's a good TLD at all
.in or .eu look like more solid investments to me :imho:

3) Yes.
4) Only the fox knows.
5) Yes.
6) Long-term, there is a future.

I see .asia more like .eu. Asia is made up of many countries speaking different languages. Just like Europe. Both have the potential of being a unifying web presence. Both will stumble on this point. The bigger countries like China and India are unlikely to accept .asia as their tld when they already have strong tld's of their own. Just like UK and Germany. You may find smaller countries may more readily accept .asia/.eu than the bigger countries. It may work best for intra-eu/asia trading from the smaller to bigger countries. The bigger companies will want the .asia names and trademarks.

I think it's a bit of a damp-squid launch. ONLY 15,000 applications is ridiculously small. How many people and companies in Asia? Billions.

I do like the way that if there is more than 1 pre-registration on a name, then the domain goes to auction. That's much fairer than they way .eu handled their launch (which was awful all round).

Code:
Q20. When will .ASIA TLD be available?

It is planned that .ASIA TLD will be launched within 6-9 months after the agreement between ICANN and DotAsia is signed. The initial launch will be phased to take into consideration intellectual property considerations as well as the best interests of the rights of others in the community. The first stage will be the Sunrise Period for trademark owners. .ASIA TLD will then be generally available to eligible customers after the Sunrise Period. Details of the arrangements will be announced as they become confirmed. Please stay tuned.
