Are you or someone you know bipolar?

I am bipolar and Im thinking about starting a community soley for those of us who suffer from the disorder and to provide information to those who are unfamiliar with the disorder.

Im wondering what kind of interest I might have in a site like this.

For those who are unfamiliar with Bi-polar Disorder:

Bipolar is phsical disorder that causes severe depression and manic stages. Bipolars often swing from depressive stages to manic stages within hours to months and can stay in these stages for months at a time. This disorder can also be refered to as Manic-Depressive Disorder.

I know friends who have had minor bi-polar disorder and one friend who had it majorly and has been hospitilised several times.

However its not easy to get some of these people to talk openly about their problems, most are often very withdrawn

Well, Im hoping that if they see that they are not alone and they see that other people have had similar experiences that they will atleast feel comfortable in discussing the fact that they are bipolar.. even tho they may not express their feeling or discuss their expriences.

Unfortunately because many attach a stigma to these types of disorders, it can be very ard to get people to talk about it outside of a controlled environment.. that's where the type forum you're suggesting comes in.. good idea and good luck!

I'm not diagnosed bipolar but have suffered from major clinical depression for over 20 years.. it's no fun and talking with like-minded people is always a plus. It helps distract you from your own problems.

A forum for BD is a good idea. I'm sure it would be a success, for more than one reason.

As an example, I know of a forum for Asperger's Syndrome (unrelated to BD, just to illustrate the point): http://www.wrongplanet.net/, it does a great job educating people about that disorder, and is a place for those that are affected or have a friend or relative with AS to gather and discuss.

Individuals who suffer from mental health issues are usually stigmatised hence the reason why so many suffer in silence.

I think this is a great idea it could be not only a forum for individuals who suffer from this disorder but could also be a resource center for sufferers and others to educate themselves and get a better understanding of the difficulties that confront those who suffer from this disorder.

Thanks for all the support for the idea as well as the suggestions. I will be working on the site this next week and will post a link once it is completed. I have found a couple doctors in different fields that are interested in contributing advice and research, so I think the site will work out great. I seem to have a lot of support for the idea. I may look into some kind of funding so doctors can provide support thru the site and the site will remain non-profit.

If you have any other suggestions, Id really like to hear them.

lol This is actually a good idea. I am actually thinking about creating a mod where when the members enter the site, they can change their mood as well as give a decription of how they are feeling. This way other members will know how to interact with them based on their mood.

Well, I decided on a name for the site: bipolar.com ( http://bipolarclub.com )

I have the forums up, but Im adding some features, so the forums are set up yet and there may be some things that done work.... If you are interested in joining, book mark it and check back in a week or two
