When discussing categories in collectibles, including antiques, toys, coins, comic books and stamps, often the term rare is linked. But this is not always the case as collectibles fit in a mass produced bracket to drive consumer demand. However, there are always rarer and more collectible baseball cards for example, than other baseball cards of that genre.

WEST

Now we go back to the summerof 2013 and RicksBlog (Remember that? ;) ) Rick appreciated a comment made by domain name investor Daniel Thralow from Mike Berkins blog TheDomains.com; Thralow quoted; Some people collect art, some people collect wine…“I happen to love domain names."
Thralow was referring to the name internet.org a domain he had 'collected' but had eventually sold to Facebook's Mark Zuckerburg, of which most now know is a site built with the intention to Connect The World. Thralow, went on to list many names in his collection, but stated “Nevertheless, Internet.org was my “Picasso”. “I thought I would own it forever."

Collectible in a sense, but not in the same way you would collect art or rare cards.

Domains are digital assets which are intangible. At least with classic collectibles, you can touch it and physically own it. Likewise though, you can have pride in owning either type.

At the end of the day, domain investors buy domains for investment purposes, not to stare at the domain on a computer screen.

Unless you're a very eccentric person, I think most people would consider it domain investing.

It's all about the proportion of Pride and Greed.

The lesser the former, the more business-like the foundations.
And vice-versa...

Even when you collect, you still consider its liquidity and value. Rare trash is still trash. And internet.org is a rare gem, for collection or actual use.

So the same NNNNN in com might go for thousands, while that NNNNN.xyz will remain trash after 100 years too.

Great post. If there is a parallel between collecting things like baseball cards and domain names, the .TEAM domain extension may bring them both together. Here's "my collection":

Many domainers are in fact domain collectors, and many do not realize it.
If you own domains that don't earn revenue, that don't sell, that have no buyers, that you don't use but that you keep renewing - what are you really ?

It depends what you are doing I guess, I’ve been investing in future tech (1 to 3 year investments) and only been doing it for a short time, but have already developed a fondness towards some of my domain names where it would take a big offer for me to sell and would probably make me sad when I did sell, so I suppose that is a ‘collectible’ mentality.

Numbered domains/random letters or quick flip domains, I don’t suppose you develop a fondness for those.

Regardless what happens to the internet as we know in the future though, I think there will probably be still a market for the best name/numbers .coms in collectible sense.

Having an interest in Emerging Technology will not yield any interest for years if successful, the domain(s) will not have any buyers until the market spikes, no traffic, revenue (where is that nowadays?)

I would personally call that investing over collecting though. Just an example; Michael Castello mentioned three hand registered names in a post that he expects to wait ten years to sell.

I own both domains and rocks/specimens/crystals (among other things, such as art).

I do buy names that I like because it's difficult to sell ones I don't like. I use some domains for my own purposes and offer for sale the others. I use sa1es.com as a URL shortener (siggy), but it wouldn't be worth much on the open market. I just like the way it looks -- I'm sure most people would disagree, but that's okay because it's not really for sa1e, anyway, so I'm not promoting it as a potential sa1es offering (LOL). Positive: domains don't take up room in my house. Negative: renewal fees.

I buy (or collect from the ground) rocks that I like; some are valuable, like the sparkly green 6.72 lb. garnet that sits around my living room, and others are not, like the small sparkly rocks from the street that end up in my pocket. Many of my rocks are from Macedonia (a rock hound's paradise), collected over a 26-year span, including one that looks like a loaf of bread (our local paper did a news story on it, LOL). I have a house full of rocks. Positive: no renewal fees. Negative: They definitely take up room -- do they ever. To my better half's chagrin, I never sell my crystals rocks, most of which are street rocks, anyway. I lurk but don't post on rock hound sites, but other rock hounds are too strange for even me, and if you don't know precise chemical formulas for specimens and rocks, they scold you, but I'm really digressing now...

I do sell domains, though. While I like them, I don't love them like I do my rocks. I have some, for various reasons, I don't want to sell, BUT for the right price I would sell. But that price would be so high that they would probably never get an offer anyway.

I don't mourn once a domain gets sold and I have the money safely tucked away; once it's gone, it's gone, no regrets.

So, I think, in a sense, domains are collectibles; one cannot last in this biz without a kind of hoarding mentality and a kind of love for one's inventory.

@MsDomainer I love the sound of your rock collection. I'm a big fan of rock formations. Too big for house collections though, but I do have some rocks and stones, mainly of unusual shapes.

Collecting too has be an interest of mine since the early 90s, and a business at one stage; mainly Chinese export porcelain and 20th century Art.

Cheers!

I will admit to being a Domain Entrepreneur & Collector :( But my collection is not for resale. It's Personal :( I'm just lucky that one domain sale takes care of my collection for a few more years :) My favorite is probably S7U.COM (STU - get it?) I could never afford the real thing. As I said. It's personal :)

IMO a good proportion of people who collect baseball cards, stamps coins etc see their 'hobby' more in investment terms than just for the sake of having their collectibles proudly displayed in glass cabinets in their offices.

I remember an old B&W movie many years ago - can't recall its title - about a collector of rare stamps who owned one of only two surviving specimens anywhere in the world of an extremely valuable stamp. When he finally acquired the other specimen he destroyed it, saying that as he then owned the only such stamp in existence it was totally unique and worth immeasurably more than the sum of the two individual specimens.

Thankfully with domains they are all unique and we don't have to search for and destroy its twin specimen lol

Big returns can yield from domaining in emerging tech, selfiesticks.com sold for 29,100 this year but it had only been reg'd about 14 months beforehand.

What other type of domaining is going to yeild this kind of return ?

Selfiesticks is now just parked, such a shame. As a newbie, this is what I am struggling to understand if I am honest. Why buy this website with any intention other than developing? Surely the parking revenue was not worth the initial outlay? And with this sort of domain, with the object itself not innovative and really just a fad, how is such a sum justifiable!

I own some drone domains including DR0N35 .COM :)- the key driver to these investments being the faith I have in the revolutionary element this tech has... But I dont think I would be able to ever justify a 5 figure sum for anything less than what I would deem remotely revolutionary...!

I suspect quite a few Chinese investors want the names simply for the sake of having them as "trophies", which I guess is the same psychology as a rare coin collector for example. In a highly superstitious society, a lucky pattern might be considered a family heirloom to pass down through the generations.

I need to plead guilty of collecting.
Only two:

vcccv.com (to me, it looks like a bird)

yyyyxxxx.com (lucky 8 characters)

Do I like them? Yes.
Do I love them? No.
