Are different domain name valued differentially for backlinking

For backlinking strategy is the domain extension of the target website important i.e. does a .gov, .edu or .org domain have more weight-age than other domain extensions.
How are various domain extensions valued by search engines and is it beneficial to target specific domain extension websites.

It really comes down to the quality of the link. If you can get a non-spammed link from a .gov, .edu you might get a little more "juice". Of course, this is always argued and you have to test, test, test to see any results.

However, links from sites that are related to your "niche" are better then links from a site that doesn't have anything to do with your niche.

Lets say for example you have a small telescope company that does custom builds for people and you are the best at what you do, and then one day NASA cast their beady eye over your little site and do a feature on personal telescopes.

Your standing with Big G has increased so much and you are now considered an authority on the subject regardless of the fact that your site may be a PR0.

Because the outgoing link is from the foremost space agency and websites in the world your little site is considered far more important and relevant due to this.

Consider next if you had been featured on Tommys Peeping weekly for voyeurs...someone may want a good telescope so again you will get a little boost but nowhere near the meteoric shove kicking and screaming into the light as you got from NASA.

Now imagine a completely unrelated field, like bog wading races...you will get absolutely no boost from this since nowhere on the site will you find the words "telescope"

And that is the key I am thinking, Big G looks for commonalities on linked sites...

It is in no way a clear example or concise or even complete and there are many variables...but getting a link back from a leviathan in your fields is going to be of far more worth than anything else. The trick is getting them.
