Time and time again i either see premium .co domains available or for sale. I am usually tempted to make a purchase but I fear the extension is gone to the dogs. Atleast, I'm not sure but not willing to make any investment without some sound advice...

What is the deal with .co domains?

.co domains are not dead, Its getting slow growth in market which is not expected. Moreover it will dominate in later years.

.co around for 24 years? :D
Anyways, .co are slowly getting traction from startups as well as .io .me and .ly
not bad if you have a few premium ones to hold onto them!

Be careful of .ly - if what you use it for violates libya law or islamic morals, they can take the domain from you, and have done that in the past (e.g. vb.ly)

Where is the policy about it, so we can read the terms & conditions?

4 REGISTERING DOMAIN NAMES

4.1 GPTC registers domain names on first come, first served basis.

4.2 Domain names must not contain obscene, scandalous, indecent, or contrary to Libyan law or Islamic morality words, phrases nor abbreviations.

http://www.nic.ly/regulations.php

While that only mentions domain names, that's what they used to shut down vb.ly which was a URL redirect service that was popular with adult websites, so clearly they apply it to more than just the name.
